Installing CDRW
I just bought a CD RW and after making all of the connections and turning on my computer it appears that it is installing the new hardware but it does not do anything. The CD RW is supposed to be compatible with my system. Would it help if I installed the software first?

Your new drive should have instructions with it. Normally, a new piece of hardware would ask for drivers, and would require you to insert a floppy or CD. Did it not ask you?

All of the directions were followed percisely. It seems like the software is supposed to be installed last. However, my computer does not let me do other things after the CDRW is connected. I just looks for the hardware but does not proceed past 0%.
If I put the software in first...I thought that maybe it might work once it is connected again. However, I saw in some messages at this site that some people have had trouble using their Iomega Zip Drives with Windows ME. I need both drives the CDRW and the zip (100). If I put the software in "Nero" will I start experiencing problems with my zip?
Windows ME, DVD, Iomega Zip 100, and new CenDyne CDRW.

Did you set the jumper pins on the CD-RW to CS (cable select) to match the other drives in your computer. Did the Directions for instalation suggest it should be set to master.
Windows ME will automatically install your CD-RW and then you need to install NERO which is your burning software and also install InCd to use a CD-RW disk as a floppy.
Here are a couple of things to help you...
This is a suggestion Before doing any work on your computer UNPLUG THE POWER CORD from the wall (Even if the power button is off there is still power going to the computer) USE PROPER GROUNDING while working on your Computer. Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface at the back of the computer before touching anything inside your computer. ( See REFERENCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE) that came with your computer. Read all directions that come with your CD-RW or other unit. MOST IMPORTANT--TAKE YOUR TIME & DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. Most mistakes are made because people are in a rush. Make sure all connections are tight. When closing up the case or replacing covers, be carefull not to pinch any wires.
(Slave) Hard Drive #2 or Zip Drive
Secondary (Master) CD-RW/DVD-RW
(Slave) CD-ROM or DVD
Dell uses the CS (Cable select configuration)
The position on the IDE Ribbon cable determines Master or Slave
The End of the Ribbon cable is the master and the center position is the slave.
If you chose to use seperate Master/Slave jumper settings the position of the unit on the cable doesn't matter.
Make sure you set the Jumper pins on the back of the unit your installing to match the configuration of your computer...
If you chose CS(Cableselect) both devices on the line have to be set to cable select..
