Installing Driver for PCI COmmunication Device

I am unable to determine just how you go about finding the missing driver for the above device on install. I have been going through a complete Win 98 SE rebuild of my system with integrated Yamaha Sound system ( using drivers from the Resource Disk and then downloaded files). Beyond frustrating.

It is attempting to install a USR 3Com modem but it is not the modem's drivers that are missing - but this integrated driver. I thought it was associated with the Yamaha drivers but it doesn't seem to be.

I have reviewed other posts and they do not seem particularly helpful.

The modem installs fine on a similarly configured system that does not use the Yamaha internal set.

PCI Communication Device is the Windows generic designation for a PCI modem that it does not have a driver loaded for. It is the modem, and once the driver is properly loaded, it will change the designation to the proper name for the modem.

To install the driver, refer here. Make sure to remove the listing for the PCI Communication Device from Device Manager first if it appears there.

OK. The modem is not being detected as part of plug and play setup. I have attempted to reisntall the modem (USR voice modem internal) but the specific driver does not seem to get recognized. I know it will work, because on a prior build attempt the modem was automatically found and installed without intervention.

I have removed the PCI device from the the system list, I have tried the modem in different sockets, etc.

More suggestions please - or more questions.

Thanks,

What exact sequence of events are you performing? For the PCI Communication Device listing to be appearing in Device Manager, it must be detected at some point during Windows' PnP detection routine. The suggested sequence of steps is to remove the listing from the Other Devices category in Device Manager and reboot. When Windows is loading, it should indicate that the device has been found, and will offer to search for drivers. If your drivers are on CD (either a separate 3Com CD or on the Dell Resource CD), make sure that you are pointing the drivers to the proper directory on the CD. If you have downloaded updated drivers from the File Library for your modem, make sure you are pointing the Windows driver search to the directory on the hard drive to which you extracted the updated drivers.

Sequence of events:

Reformmated machine
Installed WIn98 SE
Various attempts to install sound drivers (Yamaha, eventually successful although I have since reformatted and have not hit the magic button on getting them reinstalled - more on that later, maybe).

Searched for drivers on any possible location and non found. (Following the stpes that you outline). Subsequently, specified a specific modem on the hardware selection (USR 56k, etc) and it installed the drivers - but they don't work - the modem is shown as "working properly" but no software can find it.....
No Events found!
