Installing games requiring DirectX 6.1
I recently purchased a game that requires me to install DirectX 6.1 in order to play it. I'm a little leary about installing this because game setup instructions say that it may change settings already pre-set in my computer and it is difficult to uninstall. Has anyone installed this program on their computer and if so, has it caused any adverse effects?

The next thing is to install a later version of DirectX than what is already on your computer. If you have version 5 now, then go ahead and install the 6.1. But be aware that version 7 has been available on the Microsoft Web pages for a couple of months. The time that your game was made was undoubtedly before then.
Personally, I would download and install the newest version (7) from the Internet and then go ahead and install your game but take a "pass" on their version 6.1.
The following should provide all the info you need.
Directx (latest is version 7.0)
Determine Version of Installed Directx:
1. Click Start – Find – Files or Folders.
2. Type in Named box: Dxdiag.exe and click Find Now.
3. Double-click the Dxdiag.exe file, then click the System tab.
4. Note the version of Directx on the Version line.
5. To check the version info for each Dx file, click the Directx Files tab.
6. When finished, click Exit.
If the Dxdiag.exe files are not found:
(you will need to check the version of a core Directx file)
1. Click Start – Find – Files or Folders
2. Type in Named box: Ddhelp.exe and click Find Now.
3. Right-click the Ddhelp.exe file, then click Properties.
4. On the Version tab, note the version of Directx on the version line. Version 4.07.00.0700 is the same as DirectX 7.0.
5. Click OK.
For Download/Install Directx instructions:
1. Go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
