Hey,
I wrestled with trying to find the right Broadcom NIC driver  for a Dell Vostro 230 for several days.  (This driver turned out to be an audio driver!)  Arrrrgh.

I finally found this download which did the trick.

Did you install all the drivers, including the network [NIC] driver?

http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats/Product/vostro-230?DriverId=NHM1V&FileId=2940584824&urlProductCode=False

Were all the drivers installed in the correct order, starting with the DSS [Dell System Software] followed by the Chipset driver?

Windows 7 Manual Reinstall procedures are here,

You probably need to install the network driver software to make it work

Firstly check in Device Manager to see if any hardware has an !exclamation mark next to it, indicating incorrectly working hardware (usually meaning a driver is required tor Windows to work with the hardware)

You could just try downloading the Vostro 230 network driver and install it and see if it cures it

make sure the integrated nic is enabled in bios, install the drivers

if your computer freezes after enabling nic while booting then you've got a faulty nic, disable it and buy a PCI nic.

Faulty onboard NICs are rare.

Meant to write "(This driver, Broadcom_57XX-Gigabit_Integr_A00_R248117.exe, turned out to be an audio driver!)"

Other than that, the link in the 2nd paragraph should work.

This worked for me too.  Had a Vostro 230, reinstalled Win 7 Enterprise from scratch, VLC copy.  It would not locate Ethernet controller.  Installing this driver package fixed the problem for me.
