Is it safe to replace D 8300 processor to Extreme Edition

Hi everyone. It's my first time posting. My pc needs an upgrade but I need your advice.

I own a Dimensions 8300. The Specs are Intel Pentium 4CPU, 3.00GHz.. The socket is 478 PGA  and the processor Code name is Northwood. The L 1 Cache is 8KB   and the L 2 Cache is 512. I'm not sure if it has an L3.

I want to replace the processor with the Intel  Pentium 4  Extreme Edition  processor  3.4GHz   800MHz  Socket 478   L3 Cache 2MB. The sockets are the same but I'm not sure about the L Cache. Does that matter? So can it be done?

Thanks,

Isabel

It looks like yes, according to the 8300 specs below.

A few things to consider, that P4EE is a Prescott and may not work properly in your 8300 mobo despite what the specs say.   Prescott's run hotter as well.  And unless you are getting it for free or for a few bucks I would say stick with the northwood you have and save your money for a new system.

Thanks. This is something to think about. I've looked  on e-bay and other places and the Extreme Edition  processors are few  and expensive. The cheapest price I've seen is $255.

I want to upgrade for photo and video editing. Would it help if I replaced  the graphics card, added another internal hard disk drive and replaced the power supply? The Silencer 500W would provide more power. I've already added 4GB memory.

you did not say what vid card you had, but I would save the money for a new system... your upgrades are limited and  will end up costing $ with little improvement.
