KM717 Keyboard and Mouse Range

I just received 2 KM717 Keyboard and mouse bundles. The range when using Bluetooth mode is great, however, the range when using the dell wireless receiver is around 3 inches. I have to place to keyboard and mouse absurdly close to the receiver to avoid dropping keys and mouse movements.

Both sets exhibit this behavior.

Are there any firmware updates for this (I know there aren't any posted), this is basically an unusable product.

vectorcatch,

Unfortunately, there are no firmware updates for this product.

The KM717 receiver uses 2.4GHz wireless when not using BT. So is there something else nearby on that frequency which might be interfering, like a WiFi router, cordless landline phone, WiFi enabled cell phone, microwave oven...?

Can you move those devices further away from the PC?

Have you tried a different USB port on the PC?

If the KM717 set has a driver entry listed in Device Manager, double-click it and see if there's a tab where you might be able to change the 2.4 GHz channel that's being used to one that's less crowded and/or increase the transmitter's power. -  CAVEAT: I don't have a KM717 set, so I don't know if any of these changes are possible....
