Problem solved.

Although the regional settings were all set to UK but when I opened the language toolbar and checked it had entries for both US and UK English, with US being the currently active.

Deleting the US entry solved the keyboard problem.

Thanks everyone, I thought it would have to be something simple like that.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the suggestion - wise words. I've just tried the same keyboard plugged into this PC (Fujitsu laptop) and it works fine. No key translation problems at all.

I've put it back on the Dell 5000 and have noticed that in addition to the @/" problem the # and £ keys are revered and the ~/` keys are also.

It certainly looks like an OS problem to me.

I can lay hands on another USB keyboard to try tomorrow but in the meantime, any more ideas?

There is another KB setting in Control Panel, Keyboard that might be incorrect. Check those settings.

You might beg or borrow another KB to test if the new one is defective.
