Keyboard and Mouse not working! Possible Virus.
I am using a Dell Dimension E521. Running windows vista.
About 6 months ago, my brother was using the computer and possibly downloaded a file containing a virus. The computer froze, he restarted and once the computer loaded to the desktop screen, he couldn't use the mouse or the keyboard. At that time I left the computer alone because I had another one.
Recently I turned the computer on, it gave me a message saying that the system battery is low. So, I put in a new one. Now when I press the power botton, a black screen comes up saying "NO BOOT DEVICE DETECTED, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS F1 TO CONTINUE OR PRESS F2 TO SETUP MENU."
So I tried pressing F12 for boot device Menu, selecting 'Bootable Hard Drive', then selecting my hard drive. Which starts up windows vista. And my keyboard and mouse still don't work.
I have pictures on the hard drive so i don't believe formatting is an option. Is there any way to fix this. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
(I am able to use my keyboard in the setup and boot menu. Also, I have tried going into safe mode, and the keyboard and mouse dont work in safe mode.

When you replaced the battery, you reset BIOS to factory defaults so either the setting for the boot hard drive isn't correct or the stored boot sequence is not correct. Reboot and press F2 to open BIOS setup and change the boot sequence to put the hard drive first on the list. Be sure to save the change before exiting setup
Since the keyboard appears to work before Windows starts to load, it sounds like you have a Windows issue. You'll have to press F8 and run a repair of Vista. You may need your Dell Vista Reinstallation DVD, so have it handy.

I tried the vista DVD suggestion and it worked. I went into system restore and it works. Fairly easy. Can't believe I didn't try this before.

Ok, I changed the boot sequence as you said. http://imgur.com/HNKpsLy. But this still comes up. http://imgur.com/ZfO3v92. I will try the vista DVD suggestion and get back to you.

Did you do a PC Restore (resets everything to factory state) or a System Restore (resets Windows to a specific date)?
Either way, be sure to go to the Microsoft update site and let it scan your system for any missing updates. And do the same with your antiviral/antimalware software too.
