With the right deals, you can get a really nice Inspiron 6000.

Look for a low end Latitude notebook.  They're built for business-end clients and are a tad more durable than the average Inspiron.  They don't include the PC Restore feature though which is a neat tool, but it's durability compensates for the loss.  A mid-end D510 at $799 can be viewed below.

i dont not believe the latitudes have any gaming capability though, and 8 years is a long time for a laptop to be in serverice. I would say your could probably get 4 years max out of the laptop before it becomes insanely obsolete. That is even if the laptop will even live 4-8 years

Yes, thinking about it now there's hardly a notebook I know of that will be worth anything in an 8 year stretch.

This may end up being 1 new notebook each of the 4 years.

I don't see any justification for a high school student to make the extra expense of a laptop worthwhile. Get a nice desktop. For $800, you could get a decent gaming machine that will keep you happy until college. By then, the PC requirements for most colleges will have changed and you'll end up needing a new system anyway.

in 8 years you will probably need a mimum of a 3.4Ghz CPU just to do word processing

We'll be looking for a laptop for my son to bring to college next summer. We bought him his 4550 three years ago (his freshman year) and it's still a nice machine, but it does not meet the minimum requirements for three of the five colleges he's applied to. One school specifically requires a laptop, P4 running XP Pro.

I have just started college and being a freshmen in highschool you don't need to think about a laptop for college until you are a senior in school because a laptop won't last you but for maybe 4 years of memory maybe.

I would look at the mid-range Inspirons, the low end Latitudes, the Sony Vaio, or one of the "built by Asus" models.

Good luck in college.

I am in graduate school in the medical field. I would like help in deciding what type of laptop to purchase. I won't be using it for DVD's, CD's, or gaming.  Strictly for school use! I need it to have wireless Internet capabilities, Microsoft Word, Works, Excel, PowerPoint, ect... (all the bells and whistles that a professional may need). Could anyone help me figure out what exactly I need? I wanted to get this for X~mas.

Please help! :)

I would recommend you do your research on NotebookReview.com. I would look closely at the Sony Vaio, Lenovo Thinkpad and Dell Latitude. These are higher end machines that should last for a good while.
