Loading Excel from Word 97 onto a new Dell

I'm in the process of deciding on a new Dell computer that comes with a preloaded Works suite which does not include Excel. Presently, I have Microsoft Office 97, Small Business edition. Can I load office 97 onto the new preloaded computer without interfering with the registry? When I bought my last computer and tried adding Access, the computer crashed big-time. Please advise so I can make an informed purchase decision. Thank you.

I just went through all that (cept I had the CD's for Office 2K). Couldn't get Office on my 4100 and tried to install Office over Works. CRASHED BIG TIME. Tried to uninstall Works then install Office but still had odd problems. Maybe I didn't do something correctly. Because of other things I wanted to do, ended up clean installing Windows then loading Office and other apps. System runs great and is stable.

Maybe you can get it to work by just uninstalling Works then loading Office.

Why not ask Dell and ask them to confirm by email. Also get the name and location and badge # of the Dell person providing the answer.

I have on at least three occasions in the past called back and Dell say they see "some notes" but don't know who the tech support person was.

If you guys are going to install Word & Excel I would think that Works would not be of any real use. Why not un-install it then install the others?

I do not see any reason why Office and Works cannot be on the same PC unless you try to install them to the same directory. I know Access 97 & Access 2000 can coexist…

When I got my newest computer from Dell I had Works preinstalled because I didn't have it and the Newest WorksSuite is pretty good. I just installed Excel after I received it. No problem at all. They coexist great.

Now remember - Works comes with Word 2000, so I had Works, Word2000 and Excel 97. The only thing is I didn't install any Office updates. I was afraid it would mess things up.

Thanks. VentureI, I'll proceed on that basis.

What you described happened to me three years ago and took days to correct. I'm trying to avoid a repeat. Microsoft intentionally prevents doing what you and I tried to do. That's why I'm concerned. Your response confirms my fears. Thanks.
