Looking to upgrade my Graphics Card and PSU. Need help.

First off, thank you for taking the time to try and help me.

As the title says, I am looking to upgrade my PSU and GFX for my Dell Inspiron 580, I am only looking to spend around 200, maybe a little more. I want to know what the best PSU and GFX card I can get with that budget that can run games like Skyrim at the top settings if possible. I have a friend who runs the Radeon 6870 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561) and says that it can run most, if not all, games on the market right now. If it will fit in my desktop then what PSU would I need to be able to run it on my machine?

Thanks in advance.

Hi SomeNewbie,

The minimum system requirements for Skyrim are:

  • OS: Windows 7/Vista/XP PC (32 or 64 bit)
  • Processor: Dual Core 2.0GHz or equivalent processor
  • Memory: 2GB System RAM
  • Hard Drive: 6GB free HDD Space
  • Video Card: Direct X 9.0c compliant video card with 512 MB of RAM
  • Audio: DirectX compatible sound card

Dell has tested the system with following graphic cards:

  • AMD Graphics card, 1G
  • nVidia GT220, 1024M
  • AMD Radeon HD 5670, 1G
  • AMD Radeon HD 5450, 1G

You may try installing Radeon HD 6870. The minimum power supply required for the card is 500 Watt and it should fit in the system chassis. The system is shipped with a 300 Watt power supply. You may need to upgrade it. For Owner’s Manual, you may refer to the link: http://bit.ly/VphDmP.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further questions.

Would you be able to point me in the direction of a power supply that would be ideal for the system?

Hi SomeNewbie,

If you are using Inspiron 580 Mini Tower, you may use a 500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connectors. For the list of certified power supplies with the graphics card, you may refer to the link: http://dell.to/13vXYHf.

Hope this helps. please feel free to reply for any further assistance.

You don't say if you have a slim or mini tower. That discontinued card you gave the link to takes 2 slots and might not fit. Check the measurements in the Specs HERE. You might need a low profile card that fits in one slot.

Consider putting the money towards a newer model computer. Once you spend about $300 to upgrade an older computer, it makes more sense to buy new. It won't make it into a gamer.
