I have a serious problem with my Dell Dimension 5000. As a result I need to remove the hard drive and recover some data from it. I have another computer available so want to attach my Dell disk as a slave. The drive is a Western Digital WD1600. Unlike most drives this one does not show the master / slave / either  jumper configurations.

Can anyone assist?

Hard drives supported by the Dimension 5000, are SATA, not IDE/EIDE and have no jumper settings.

You need to use another computer that supports SATA, or remove the SATA hard drive from the Dimension 5000 and using an USB 2.0 adaptor similar to THIS and attach the hard drive to an USB port on a working computer transfer the files and folders to it.

Note: Only data files can be transfered, any applications, utlities and programs, need to be reinstalled from their CD's, or downloaded from the publisher's website.

I realised that there was more to it after writing my note, when I noticed all the connections were different to those of the pc I was going to connect it to.

will be off to find an adapter today.

thanks for the help.
