It's your machine, but I would avoid NU 3; certainly avoid having the utilities run in the background.

Crashguard is a worthless product, IMHO.

I really don't recall what else is in NU 3; it has been over 18 months since I removed it from my system. There may be parts of the NU 3 that you wish to use; if so, do so. However, unless you really need the utility running in the background, you will probably want to make sure that it isn't.

With regard to anti-virus software, running multiple AV software, while possible, isn't something I would do. Again, I don't recall if NAV is part of NU 3; if it is, I would chose one AV software package and uninstall or not install the others.

I'm not a fan of McAfee. Unless they have changed, you have to download an entirely new definition file whenever they update. In other words, they don't just add the new definitions, you also have to download all the old ones too. As mentioned, this may have changed; I haven't used McAfee in quite some time.

I use NAV 5 on one machine; NAV 2K on another. I'm very comfortable with NAV 5; still figuring out 2K.

NAV updates are quick and easy; you are only required to update with new definitions.

I've no experience with Dr. Solomon's, but I thought that they were bought by someone...

Adios!

So did my Dell but I deleted it immediately and installed Norton AV 5.0 then replaced
that with Norton AV 2000 which seems more streamlined and faster.
I had McAfee last year but got too many False Postive virus reports..Never got one with Norton and Norton is rated the best overall by many publications.
Incidentally if you are close to a Sams Wholesale Club you can pick up Norton AV 2000
for $9.95

Scott-

I'm using 2K on one of my computers; not my main machine. It is actually mostly my wife's machine.

One good reason for her having 2K is the email scan. She has been hit with a couple of email virii. 2K will scan email before it even hits your mailbox. It basically sets up a phantom server and scans it in the phantom server before allowing it to go to the inbox.

I have only very recently obtained this computer and the software; additionally, I haven't had the time to really use it, so any further comments at this time are premature.

One thing that does bug me is that I'm using ICS to provide internet/email to the computer. I think NAV 2K is demanding a connection whenever the computer is on since my host will dial up if not connected whenever the computer is on.

This is probably related to a "check for new virus definitions" feature; in light of the minizip virus, this may not be such a bad idea...

Adios!

Norton Anti-Virus is a seperate product from Norton Utilities, so there's no problem installing both on the same system.

You don't want to have two Anti-Virus programs running at the same time though. So don't install McAfee and Norton Antivirus at the same time.

Don't bother with Dr. Solomon's. It was purchased by McAfee anyway, and I wouldn't personnally trust it. Not with the supirior (and very cheap) McAfee and Norton Antivirus products on the market.

Whatever brand virus scanner you use, make sure you update it's DAT files every month (and download any available upgrades to the scanner itself). McAfee has DAT files that come out aproximatly once a month, with an update to the program itself maybe once or twice a year. Dr Solomon's is screwy-it dosen't really have seperate DAT files, so you have to remove and reinstall the entire program every time they bother updating it-which isn't even that often. I honestly don't understand why Dr. Solomon's is still in use. It seems to have cheaper corprate licensing, and it's supposedly popular in Europe...but that sure dosen't make it better.

As others have said, Crash Guard and similar products are worse than useless. And turn off the constant monitoring of your system that's an option in Norton Utilities. It has it's uses, but 99.9% of the time it's just eating up resources without doing anything. Just manually run Scandisk and Speeddisk every month or so.
