Memory Installation Order in Dimension 4700 Question
I recently inherited a Dimension 4700 which, BTW, is surprisingly fast for a five year old machine.
I updated the RAM from 512 MB to 2.5 GB by putting two 1 GB DIMMs in Slots 3 and 4 on the motherboard. It works fine. But, I was wondering, is there any benefit to moving the larger DIMMs to Slots 1 and 2 and relocating the original 256 MB DIMMs to Slots 3 and 4?
Would putting the larger DIMMs in Slots 1 and 2 result in any kind of measurable performance boost? I've looked in Dell's documentation and on the Web and not found any reference to this.
Thx.

Thanks europa303.
I feel pretty much the same way. The only clue one gets from the documentation is that, when you have one DIMM, you should always place it in Slot 1, since it's closest to the CPU. But, whether that kind of logic can be extrapolated to other configurations, I don't know. If I try it, I'll let you know.
Cheers!

Most people recommend installing the larger modules in the first slots, but I don't know of testing to prove this results in better or faster results. That said, I still do place the larger capacity modules in the lowered number slots. Couldn't hurt and if you do so, let us know if you can detect any difference. I kinda doubt it. Enjoy.
