Hi Len

Sounds like you have two different types of memory.  What Dimension model is it that you have?

Kind regards

Janie

The computer is a Dimension 4100.  Here are the specs:

OS Name Microsoft Windows
Version 4.90.3000   Build 3000
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Name 1GM8T01
System Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation
System Model XPS-Z
System Type X86-based PC
Processor Pentium(r) III processor GenuineIntel ~1000 Mhz
BIOS Version
Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
Locale United States
Time Zone Eastern Standard Time
Total Physical Memory 127.26 MB
Available Physical Memory 436.00 KB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.75 GB
Page File Space 1.88 GB

The computer will normally not start when the memory is put in.  The memory was purchased directly from Dell, so I'm pretty certain the speed is correct.

Thanks for your help.

Since both memory sticks work in the first slot, but it won't run with the new stick in the secondary slot:

Try putting the old stick in the second slot and NOTHING in the first slot.

If it works, you've proven that the second slot works ok.

Try putting the new stick in the second slot and NOTHING in the first slot.

If it works, you've validated that both memory sticks are good.

Put the new stick in the first slot and the old stick in the second slot.

If that doesn't work, you've proven that the two sticks together are causing a problem, probably because the new stick isn't right.  Then post both part numbers, identifying each stick and it's number.

Tried all the advice.  Computer still will not upgrade memory.  With two 128 stick in, nothing happens, just a blank screen.  I also have a 256 stick and it will power up but then as soon as I try to do an application it freezes the system up.  It will only work with one 128 stick in the primary slot.  Any other ideas short of throwing it out th window?

If you can't make it run with a good stick in the 2nd slot and nothing in the first slot as I suggested, you have a bad slot.  Call for service.
