Memory upgrade

I have a dimension 4600 P4 the current memory is 512MB ddr sdram at 333MHz. Is a Corsair Value Select dual channel kit compatible? I can get two 512 at a really low price to give me 1gig of memory. I'm not sure if this will work or the way to go.

Thanks for the help in advance

Hi,

Dell computers have long had a reputation for not working well with low quaility cheap RAM.

Your best source would be http://www.crucial.com, guaranteed to work, life time warrantly and as good a price as there is.

Right on Ceri!

I have used Crucial on 5 different Dells. Each was a perfect match & no failures. RAM is not what you want to save on. Corsair is good too but will it match your system like crucial does?

That's what i like to know if Corsair is as good or will work as good as Crucial ? At newegg.com it's $138 for 1 gig. The Crucial is well over $200. What my understanding is that corsair is just as good. Any more ideas ? The url that was posted in the forum is costly and most things they sell in the pc line.

Since newegg won't guarantee compatibility, you risk a restocking charge and a shipping charge - if you're willing to take that risk, try it.

Corsair RAM has a bad track record with Dell systems, so it is a gamble.

I'm using Corsair Value Select RAM in my 8300, no problem as long as it meets specs.

Verify the ones you're getting have the same speed and CL rating as your current memory.  Also, some users have reported buying it online where it's rated as one CL rating and the stick even has that CL rating labelled on it, but when they plug it in the memory had a faster CL rating.  Most buyers wouldn't mind this, since they're getting faster speed at no extra cost; but the Dell BIOS limitations mean you want all your memory to have the exact same CL rating (or just pull the old and only keep the new in order to use the faster CL).

Corsair "Value Select" RAM just means it can't be overclocked.  What I like about it is that it still comes with the same quality and support of their main line memory.  Unlike other brand's value RAM, the Corsair still comes with a full lifetime warranty.

FYI: I got mine from a local store with a good return policy and a good sale at the time.  If buying online, take into account both the return policies as well as shipping costs.  I know that Crucial.com has free shipping; once you factor that in, it can still be the better deal.  I saw the memory before shipping and taxes from Crucial was around $155, and $142 from newegg.  If newegg has shipping, it may be a better deal just going with Crucial, especially given return policies.
