The density of the module and the speed aren't necessarily correlated. Just the faster RAM and higher density becomes more abundant and cheaper as time passes.

The 1600 MHz is the maximum speed of memory you can use with your system as you have the Intel X48 Chipset so you should get it. You may consider following my wiki A Clean Install of Windows Vista using a retail 64 bit .iso with your 25 digit product key to upgrade to the 64 bit OS. My wiki explains this in detail (step 3 for getting the media).

Hi natakuc4,

Sorry, Vista 32bit here. Yes i realise 32bit OS won't make use of more than 4GB, that's ok.

The kits in the link, i see DDR3-1066, i presume that's twice the speed of my old RAM (533), or is this because 1 stick contains 2GB, that's it's effectively doubled?

You should get 1 or 2 of these kits here. This will give you 4 or 8 GB respectively. For compatibility Crucial RAM is recommended for Dell systems.

What is your operating system. Windows Vista or Windows XP? You should upgrade to the 64 bit version of Vista or 7 to use more than 4 GB of RAM.

I've decided to go ahead and purchase the Crucial 4GB kit from the link you provided in your first reply, and i will certainly consider upgrading to 64 bit Vista in the not so distant future. Also thanks for providing the guide on upgrading to 64 bit, very helpful and much appreciated.
