MessageApp
When I turn on my computer there is sometimes a button labeled "MessageApp" which I cannot open. How do I open it to see what it is?

The MessageApp doesn't cause any problems in itself, does it?

It will not cause any problems if you uninstall it. What you might want to do, however, is disable it from running at startup using msconfig. That way if you need it at some point in the future, you can re-enable it.

I don't have Windows XP, but I think the following should work. Go to Start > Run and type msconfig followed by Enter. Click on the startup tab and remove the checkmark next to Dell Support or messageapp (I don't know which one would be listed there). If this isn't right, there is always the Help file on your computer - just search for msconfig.

See if the following thread and the included links help answer your question:

Since I don't have a Dell with Windows XP, I don't know how it is listed in the startup group. If you post a list of what's in your startup group, however, I'm sure I can figure out which one it is.

I posted a possible solution to the MessageApp "button of mystery" on a message thread to DODman . Remember, this is not "spyware". It just spies on your computer and sends reports back to Dell. What would you call it?
In short: look for a file called "AlertView.exe" in "C:\Program Files\Dell\Support\Alert\bin" directory. At the botton of the program window click on the "Usage tracking settings" and the "New alert Notification Settings" to disable these functions. There is also a file called "RemDellAlert.exe" but I have not tried it.
I just tried this fix. I'll know in a few days if it works.

Using the AlertView.exe program to disable the MessageApp "button-of-mystery" didn't work. Now I have moved all the files in the "C\Program Files\Dell\Support\Alert\Bin" directory to another directory. That may do it.
See my reply on 2/17/03 to favisham99 (10/7/2002).

On the MessageApp "Button of Mystery", the DaMon program that was moved to another directory reappeared when Norton System Works repaired the missing shortcuts.
If you use System Works or something similar to repair shortcuts, you will need to uninstall the DAMon program, or rename the files, or remove the files... or use the PC Magazine free Startup Cop (www.pcmag.com) program and disable the DAMon program.
