Midi with a SoundMax digital integrated chip
Ok I have a Dimension 8300 with Windows Xp with a SoundMax digital integrated audio chip, all audio formats sound great but when it comes to midi files, i'll just say it, it sounds like trash, the quality of the sound especially some of the high notes sound like, lets just say lower quality than that of the sound from the original Nintendo from the 1980s. I read on the SoundMax website that they say they are the "PC sound leaders for Midi." well to tell you the truth their not, I've heard better sounding midi on a Crystal semiconductor chip in my old HP, and they say they included the Yamaha XG sound set, I know what the XG sound set sounds like because I had the Yamaha S-YXG70 driver on the HP and even without it being on the HP the midi music still sounded better than the garbage I'm hearing, also the midi sounds better on the Inspirion we have with the Sigma Tel chip.
So if anyone knows any sites where I can download midi sound sets to replace the General Midi or know any midi drivers that are compatible with the SoundMax chip let me know. If not I'm open for recommendations.

Look into the Roland VSC33. That is the current Roland software MIDI synth that is being shipped with the current verions of Band in a Box. I don't think it's available as a free download but it's what many musician friends of mine use, that don't have a decent hardware MIDI synth such as the ones provided with the SoundBlaster Audigy.
I know several that play with "tracks" on a laptop for live performances and they use the Roland VSC33 midi synth.

What driver version are you using for the soundmax? I'm using Ver 3650. Came on the Dell driver CD. Doesn't appear to be available as a download from the Dell site yet. Midi sounds great using this driver version. Also, make sure you have installed the latest DirectX (ver 9b).
Good luck,
