Missing File in AUTOEXEC.BAT - Needed?

REM ******* DO NOT REMOVE *****
C:\DELL\USBINFO.EXE /FIX
REM ******* DO NOT REMOVE *****

Is in my Autoexec.bat on Dimension XPS R400 running Win 98. Checked the directory and as expected, no such file. Is this needed? Systems seems to run ok except I recently started getting blue screens during shut down. The latter results in losing clusters. I need to solve that problem so my system does not slowly eat itself away!

Well, my Autoexec.bat is empty. I run 98SE. Did you upgrade to 98, or was it installed? I do know I didn't need any special software to use my USB port, and I now have a CDRW attached and working great. I vote that it is unnecessary, but what do I know?????

Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java.

Alot of good information!

And more information found here!

kheilbr1,
Are you using any USB devices? In any case, I think this USBINFO.EXE /FIX file is unrelated to your crashing on shutdown problem. I haven't found any specific information, but my guess is that this file modifies a Dell informational, or configuration file pertaining to USB configuration, or something along those lines.

The Microsoft knowledge database has quite a bit of information on Windows98 shutdown problems. I'll post it to you if I see something relavent.

Thanks! The USB works fine, just curious why the call to the program was still in the autoexec with dire warnings not to remove! :-)

I will check MS to track the blue screen issue now.
