Missing dll file

I made the mistake of installing Works Suite 2001
over my works 99. It was a very bad installation.
I uninstalled and sent it back to Microsoft.
Now I am missing MSO97.dll and can't use Word at
all.
I don't know how to find this file. I have read all of
the instructions at the Dell Information, but am more
confused than ever.
Can someone give specific instructions as to where
I can look. I used the System File Checker, but
didn't have any luck at all. I put the Win98 CD in,
put the Word CD in, but each time it didn't work.
I don't know what to say when it asks me for a
path.
Thanks for your help.

Try looking here. The DLL archive Why don't you uninstall Word 97 from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and reinstall it?

Type start, find and type in mso97.dll then choose find. It should show this file as being in the
C:\Program Files\MS Office\Office
If it is not there then I can send it to you and you can put it there. Would need your email address.

Dave, thanks it was there as C:|programFiles\

No msoffice\office.

Is this what I use when I go back to System File
checker?

my address is littlegreyhen@msn.com -

Can you give me the next step?

Thanks,

Ok. I need to ask you a couple questions first. Did you originally have MS-Office 97 or was this just winword only that you installed? We don't want to put this where mine is located if you don't have MS-Office 97. Also, are you trying to load winword from an old shortcut on the desktop? Now, when you located that file using the run feature did you right click on it and select properties? If not do that because it will show you what is after the C:\program Files\?
Was you entry here a typo? (the C:|) or did you mean C:\
I will check back a little later.

What I originally had was Works Suite 99. When
I uninstalled the Works Suite 2001, it took my
Word with it.
I had already uninstalled Works 4.5.

What I have done is to use the custom installation
from the Works 99 disk, and I reinstalled the Works
4.5 and Word 97.

When I first got this error msg,. I reinstalled the
Word, but it didn't fix the problem.

Yes, I meant \ instead of|. You see when I first
used the find, it never would bring up the mso97.dll
evidently it was because I had MS097.dll instead
of the correct mso97.dll.

I just have a hard time understanding some of this
language sometimes.

I located the file using the find. I will try the run
and get back to you.
Thanks

What you really should do is to uninstall all the works suite both 2001 and 99 and if word is still there remove it also. Now, are we talking about word as in Microsoft winword 97 or are we talking about wordpad? I am sorry I have to ask but it seems that the easiest way out of this is to uninstall all this stuff and then reboot the system. Then be sure all files have been remove for all these like under windows, or program files or startup. Just look under windows explorer and remove anything that points to either of these programs. Go to add/remove programs under control panel and remove anything there also. Now, once all has been remove install the programs you want. If you do not have MS-Office 97 then that file would not be where mine was located. You could maybe find the mso97.dll file and try to associate it to word.

Okay Dave, I will see what I can do.

I had already uninstalled the Works Suite 2001. This
is what has caused my problem to begin with. I also
reinstalled the Word 97, but don't remember if I
uninstalled first. I do think that I did.

The Word that we are talking about is Miscrosoft
Word 97 which was included with the Works Suite 99
that came in the computer when I bought it from
Dell.

What is strange is that mso97.dll came up in the
find, but only showed a part program file.

If I were more computer literate, I could probably
know what to do or ask.
I do appreciate your help.

Sometimes when you install a newer version of a program it will retain part of the other when installing and sort of links itself to the other version. I do believe getting rid of all of it including the mso97.dll file and everything under program files is the way to go and do a reboot afterwards so that the registry can be updated also. Once all this is done then just install the old version again. Leaving town in the morning so good luck and let me know.

greybird,

I've read this thread and I'm not sure where you stand at the moment. Have you uninstalled/reinstalled Word97?

As far as the mso97.dll, I don't know what version is available at the download site, but I believe your installation needs version 8.0.5425, which is what I have with my Word97.

For the location of the file, do a find for three files: winword.exe, word97.jfd, and wdread8.txt. These three files should all be in the same folder, and that is the folder where mso97.dll should also reside. The particular location will vary depending on how Word97 got there--Dave has Office so it is under Office, I only have Word97 so mine is under Word97\Office\.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it didn't
solve my problem.

Thank you for sending the link. I did find a mso97.dll there.

Debating about downloading. What file would I
put it in when I unzip it?

Sorry to be so dumb!

Thanks

At the present time I have uninstalled Word 97,
and reinstalled.

I am still missing the mso97.dll -

My version is 8.04202 - The download version is
the same.

I have this file downloaded, but have not unzipped
it because I really don't know what I am doing. I
don't know where to put it.

I am going to look for the 3 files that you are
talking about. According to what I have found out,
this dll file is in C:\ProgramsFiles\MSOffice\Office,

Yet when I go to the system file checker to extract,
I don't have any luck at all. Which CD am I supposed to put in? So far it hasn't made any
difference whether I use Win98 or Word97.

Appreciate the help.

Another reply....

All three of the files you gave me are in the same
folder with mso97.dll

My question is this. Under the general section of
the mso97.dll, Attributes - are any of the boxes
supposed to be checked? None of mine are, and
I was wondering if this could be causing my problem.

Thanks for your help.

greybird,

It took some searching, but I think I may have found the procedure which will fix the problem. Go here. I found one citation which indicated that running the utility that is linked to at that site (BDRINFIX.EXE) will clean out the Registry entries from an old installation of Office 97 (or Windows 97) which is said to cause the error message that mso97.dll is missing. You may want to simply try the Registry edit that it mentioned later in the article, however, and then reinstall Word 97. Since you have mso97.dll on your CD, there should be no need to worry about the copy you downloaded. (And, incidentally, none of the blocks in Properties are checked in my copy of mso97.dll.)

Denny, I have a question.

I finally got the mso97.dll extracted but I have not
unzipped it yet.

I uninstalled word97 and reinstalled. Now the 3 files
winword.exe, word97.jfd, and wdread8.txt are in
C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice

The original mso97.dll file is in a different file.
C:\ProgramFiles\MSOffice\Office.

I had the one that I extracted set to go to
C:\ProgramFiles\MicrosoftOffice\Office.

Now, my question is this. Should I extract this
mso97.dll to the same file that the 3 above files
are in?

Any help you can give will be most appreciated.

Incidentally, I went to some of the links you had
and was able to correct my shutdown problem. Thanks so much.
