Mouse Erratic and Freezing Randomly

Hey there- I have a Dell 4300, running Windows XP pro, 384mb ram, 20 gig hard drive, 56k dialup isp etc.  I've been reading the boards looking for problems similar to mine, and while there are many like mine, some just aren't quite the same.  My mouse is a MS Intellimouse, PS/2, and I'm pretty sure it was a Windows patch, or lack of ram, or something in that order that caused this.  About 2 months ago, it was jumping all over the screen, right clicking stuff, and then it just froze.  I restarted it, and the mouse was back, and everything was ok, but a few days later, same thing, it froze.  So my solution, hopefully it's only temporary, is to restart the computer every time that happens.  However lately, sometimes after I restart, it freezes upon start up, causing me to restart again.  I once had to restart twice because it froze upon startup twice.  Slowly the problem has been escalating, and the mouse begins freezing more often, yet random and sporadically.  And I am not necessarily online when it freezes, as I use dialup.  Please help me fix this problem, it is getting a bit agitating, and I've tried to d some of the solutions on the board, but still erratic mouse.  I am hesistant to buy a USB mouse until I know or sure there is no possible solution to this problem.

Regards,

Jess

The symptoms you describe are indicative of a faulty mouse.  The easiest way to troubleshoot this is to move the mouse to a different computer if you can find one to use.  If the problem moves with the mouse, you know it is a mouse problem and will have to replace the mouse.

Thanks for the reply. However I don't think it's a faulty mouse. I notice it happens when I'm multitasking, like playing a game and browsing the web at once, or it happens when there's much activity going on, which is why at first I speculated there's a lack of ram, but then again it might be a patch which seemed to cause similar problems with other users. I will still check my mouse in the event it is faulty, but it just seems like something with the system. I don't know if it is useful information, but the mouse actually FEELS lighter once it freezes up... and oh, while writing this, it scrolled down the page twice without me touching it.

JessicaTL,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum (DCF).
* Click Start- Run
* Type MSCONFIG [press the Enter key]
* Insert the dot to Normal Startup
* Click Apply- OK (Don't restart the system)
* Right-click the [Start] button
* Left-click Open
* Double-click Programs
* Double-click Startup (Everything you see in the start up group is actually running all the time, which just takes away from your resources)
* Move ALL the icons in the Startup box to the desktop. Here is how too move the icons:
* Right-click the icon [hold the button down]
* Drag the icon out of the Start Up box
* Let go on the desktop
* Left-click "Move Here")
* After you have moved all the icons onto the desktop, close all the boxes
* Click Start- Shutdown- Restart- OK or Click Start- Turn Off Computer- Restart

Hey well I tried a new fix.. The aforementioned solution didn't work. Just realized my Windows XP Pro was not a legit copy.... soo... I bought a new one, and its been about 3 days since I intalled the new, licensed pro, and didnt get any problems just yet. Mine was a pirated version, so I think that might have been it... I'll let you know if my mouse freezes up again, but I hope it's fixed now

 ::fingers crossed::

I have a fairly new Dimension XPS Gaming rig with the very same mouse problems.  It freezes erratically for one to several seconds.  It was fine until about three days ago.  I tried system restore-no help.  I reinstalled the PS/2 Windows mouse drivers-no help.  I Updated my audio and video drivers-no help.  I Went through the Dell customer service for XPS and ran a windows repair algorithm-chkdsk /r at the boot menu-no help.  I used an old PS/2 mouse from my prior Dell XPS B 866 and that helped, somewhat.  It is a problem at times when not running any particular program, just moving the mouse across the desktop, but it is extreme when I run a high end FPS game called planetside--the mouse freezes and stutters every other move I make.  Dell is sending me a new mouse but I am wary that this will solve the problem.  Ideas?

Jessica's problem is not unusual.  With over 3000 hits on the original thread, I would say it is pretty common and Dell/Microsoft ought to do something about it other than deny that it is a problem.

Chris M:  Your 08-27-2003 11:55 AM fix does not work.  Nor do any of the others I found in the forum.

Dimension 8200, XP SP1:  PS/2 Intellipoint Mouse works satisfactorily until it takes a mind of its own, opens all kinds of pages, jumps about the place and then freezes up solidly.

Restart/reboot the computer, and it comes back to life...for a short while!  Then, ...all over again.  At least every two or three hours, lately, and seems to be getting worse,.... more frequent.

Have swapped out with a new mouse from the other (newer) Dell 4200.  Samo samo, ....No luck!

Have reloaded the drivers.  No luck!

Have begun to wonder why I bought a Dell (Two of them, in fact).  My initial motivation was their supposedly comprehensive support system, but that seems to be more hype than support.  I guess we just never learn....)

Glad to hear that it is not a common problem!

To all,

* Reboot the computer
* When the Dell logo screen appears, press the F2 key until the computer enters the System Setup program
* Press the [Down Arrow] key until CPU Information is highlighted
* [Hit Enter Key] to display the available choices
* Press the [Up Arrow] key or the [Down Arrow] key to highlight Hyper-Threading
* Press the [Spacebar] to toggle from Enable to Disable
* Press the [Esc] key to exit from the CPU Information menu
* Press the [Esc] key to Save and Exit
* Press the [Enter] key when you are prompted to Save changes and exit now

ChrisM:

O-o-o-ops!  Sorry about that, but the multiple sending was just one of the tricks that the wild mouse can do....and I never did get to finish the message.

I'm running Dimension 8300 (CTHZ51S) in "as delivered" configuration with DELL PS/2 Intellipoint Mouse.

Mouse still erratic.  Any new ideas?

ChrisM:

Thanks for the prompt response with the neat fix in Systems Setup.  Unfortunately, SYSTEMS SETUP>>CPU INFORMATION contains CPU SPEED, BUS SPEED, PROCESSOR 0 ID and CACHE SIZE.  But it does not contain HYPER-THREADING.

Earlaiman,

This US Dimension 8300 page:
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/systems/dim8300/sm/syssetup.htm#1104309

Does your entire bios differ? From what country was your Dell purchase made?

I am interested in knowing what effect turning off hyper-threading has on the behaviour of the mouse.  If indeed this resolves our problems of erratic mouse movements, then why is hyper-threading marketed as a selling point of these computers?  Does Dell plan to supply a mouse that works with the hyper-threading technology?

My mouse froze to the point of completely shutting down my system.  Dell's response was to replace the motherboard, but I still have problems with my Logitech Cordless Mouse and with the delivered Dell corded mouse, regardless of which port I connect to.  I went through all of the troubleshooting steps that were outlined in the automated e-mail, I was on the phone for almost an hour walking through various troubleshooting steps with Dell Customer Support, and still this mouse problem exists.   Every time I phone Dell, I am asked to walk through the same series of troubleshooting steps, which seems redundant to me since I have already completed them multiple times, and which is preventing me from phoning back for additional assistance.  At this point in time, I am tempted to take my system to someplace like London Drugs or CompuSmart and pay for them to service it, even though I purchased an extended warranty with my Dell 4600 and my system is only 6 months old.

Is Dell actively pursuing investigating this problem that so many of its customers appear to be having?

im glad im not the only one experiencing this problem. Im using a Dell Dimension 2100 on Windows ME. I am having exactly the same problem and it seems to be getting worse. The mouse im using is a standard dell PS/2 mouse (im not exactly sure which one). Also the keyboard freezes too, which prevents me from even rebooting properly sometimes. I have tried pretty much everything and nothing seems to work and im getting fed up! can anyone solve this problem once and for all!?
