Mouse and Keyboard Don't Work after WIndows Update
Hello,
Yesterday (5/11/11) I installed the latest windows update and today when I turned it on, the mouse and keyboard don't work when it reaches the windows login screen. I've tried connecting and reconnecting both, and they work until the login screen appears. When I first turn on the computer the mouse lights up, but then goes off as soon as windows starts to load.
I have a Dell Inspiron 560 and I've never had any trouble with it until now.
I've gone into the BIOS menu and all the USB settings are enabled.
I can't use any other mouse because this computer only has USB ports.
I can't even get past the login screen to get to the desktop.
Any suggestions?
Jack

Ok fixed it.
Turns out the computer wasn't completely restarting all the way, (I realized this when I noticed it was saying "Resuming Windows"), so when I hit F8 it wasn't doing what it was supposed to. Once I realized this, I REALLY restarted the computer, hit F8, then selected the option to boot with the last known good configuration.
Loaded windows fine and no more problems with the mouse or keyboard.
As I suspected, somehow the windows updates that installed on May 11th didn't install correctly. I'll make sure they do this time, or at least I know exactly what I need to do now!

Turn it on with Keyboard and mouse attached.
Let it sit at the login screen for 30 min.
Come back and see if it logs in.
If it does.
Then Move the mouse to each and every usb port EXCEPT the one the keyboard is on.
Then Move the Keyboard to each and every usb port Except the one the mouse is on.
Until you have round robin detected the mouse and keyboard on every port.
Then when you boot the next time it will "find" the devices automatically.
If its not working after 30 min then you have malware that has disabled the windows installer.
Systems infected with USB related viruses and malware will lose mouse and keyboard detection.
After complete reinstall of windows try to disable the auto run feature to prevent further infection and get antivirus software.
Microsoft Security Essentials is free.

What version of Windows?
What happens if you boot in Safe Mode? Reboot and press F8 before Windows starts to load. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the menu. If this is XP and keyboard works in Safe Mode, you may be able to do a System Restore from Safe Mode to fix the problem. The updates will have to be reinstalled.
If keys don't work Safe Mode, reboot and press F8 again. Select "last known good" from the menu. If that fixes it, shut down normally and reboot normally. You may have reinstall yesterday's updates again.
If you're still stuck, you may need to do a Repair/Reinstall using your Dell Windows Reinstallation disk. Personal files will be ok, but you will probably have to reinstall a bunch of Microsoft updates again. In order to do the Repair/Reinstall, your Windows CD has to have the same version (Service Pack) as on the hard drive.

Tried waiting 30 minutes and still no change. I doubt there is malware because I have several antivirus and anti-malware programs running, and I never visit anything questionable. I've never had a problem until the new windows updates were installed on the 11th.
My guess is that the updates didn't install correctly and corrupted something.

I've tried restarting in safemode and it won't seem to go into safemode. I have Windows 7. If I hit F12 as it restarts I get that menu but there's no mention of safemode. F8 doesn't seem to do anything.

Glad you fixed it. :emotion-21:
When there's a problem like this, the first thing should always be to power off completely and then restart. Sometimes that's all it takes.
Hopefully, you'll be able to install the updates without problems now.

Resuming Windows message appears when the computer wakes from Hibernation. It's normal. You should read about it in Help and check your Power settings, Advanced settings to select when and if you want to use it.
