I have the same issue.  I have an XPS420 Ultimate and I believe I have the same display card.  I've found several mentions of this on the web but no fixes.  There have to be many more people with this problem.

Interesting... I did some searching and only found one guy who mentioned something like this, but didn't mention what computer he was using. I should also mention on the resizing that even though the cursor is way offset to the right, on click it snaps to the correct location. I have to assume this is an ATI problem, but couldn't find anything on their site. I opened a support ticked on their site, but never heard back... what a shock :-|

I've got the exact same problem. Inspiron 530. ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT. Vista.

Any solution?

Well, I just spent 30 minutes with a Dell tech troubleshooting this problem remotely. Since it appears to be an issue with the video card, he installed the latest version of the drivers from Dell's website. After a quick reboot, the problem went away.

So, the solution appears to be, you need to uninstall the current drivers, and then install the latest from Dell's website. The drivers installed from the factory are already out of date.

Hope this helps.

That's great news... I'll give it a try and report back.

Jack,

I have essentially the same system with the same problem.  I downloaded the newest driver and it went away.

Well... I updated the driver and it works! No more mouse mis-alignment. Unfortunately, now from time to time I go from two monitors to one and the resolution changes to 600 x 800. To make matters worse, the catalyst control center won't launch so the only way to solve the problem is a reboot... so not sure I'm thrilled with this particular "fix". One of the potential problems is that when I went to download the driver, there were two exact same titles that applied to my driver, but the files were named R170619.exe and R170181.exe so I'm not sure which one is right... I tried 619... I ended up with that problem... then I tried 181, but that didn't fix it either.

I also have a XPS 420 and have the mouse alignment problem.  At first, I thought it was a new "feature" from Vista. :)

Does anyone have the direct link to the driver I need to install to fix this problem?

I need to uninstall the driver first right?

Just go to Dell.com and select the "Drivers and Downloads" option.  When you enter your service tag, it will show you a plethora of updated drivers for your system.

You don't need to uninstall the original driver.

I would recommend un-installing the original software and driver first. I did a straight upgrade, and suddenly my two monitors only worked on one and the resolution was stuck at 800 x 600 and the Catalyst Center software stopped working so I had to reboot to get my resolution back. When I uninstalled all the ATI software, and re-installed, it worked fine after that. It's also confusing because there are two downloads that are labeled exactly the same, but have different filenames. I just went with the highest filename number figuring that was how they versioned. Good luck.

Round about way I learned of the fix ...
Microsoft Vista users forum pointed back to Dell support ...
The ATi 2400 and 2600 seem to have the same issue.
I used the custom install and let the software point me to the un-installed portion of the video driver.
I installed that portion and now ...
... the mouse cursor now has the familiar feel and accuracy I expected.

I have an XPS 420 received about January 9th with the same video card. I'm about to install the "new" drivers. Seems I messed up my last Dell doing just this - so I'm crossing my fingers.

I tried to do an update with the ATI installation program, but that resulted in the Catalyst Control Center being uninstalled. So I did an uninstall and then an fresh install. It "appears" to work ok now. I tested the cursor on an email message and the cursor now seems to position itself correctly when editing.

Same problem on my new Inspiron 530 (Jan 18 2008) with the ATI 2600XT. Downloaded the latest drivers from Dell (Version 8.420 dated 19/09/2007) and mouse pointer on re-size works perfectly.

Anyone try the new catalyst drivers 8.1 from ATI?
