NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver stopped responding - No fix?!
Hi guys, first time on any forum but I'm really stuck here.
If you can solve this I'm sure I owe you my life savings or more. The stress is unreal.
Before I start.. System specs:
Alienware X51 3450
Intel Core i5 3450
8GB RAM
BIOS A13
Issue
So, a few weeks ago I get the notification to update to update to Windows 10.. I think sure why not. After updating, and I'm talking next day, I try to play my usual games. GTA 5, TerraTech, World of Tanks, you know, nothing spectacular or hard to run. And they are all freezing within 5-10 minutes MAXIMUM of gameplay. This is the error:
My attempt at finding a problem:
I speak to I think Microsoft first who suggest downgrading back to 8.1 obviously I assume Windows 10 has caused this issue and 8.1 would fix that.. Issue still remains.
After hours on the phone I've had system checks and virus checks, various scans on menus I've never even seen before and no fix, promptly passed on to someone else, NVIDIA
I speak to NVIDIA who check very similar things and also make me uninstall all my drivers and re-install from their provided links, still no fix.
Today I've just got off the phone with Dell, he once again checked my drivers and downloaded an old graphics/video driver to see if this will help, the one in that screenshot V311.06, from Dell's website. This didn't fix the issue.
Now according to him my next step is to totally wipe my PC by spending £30 on a clean install of 8.1, I'm wondering what anyone can suggest.. If this is the only fix I'll just never play PC games again and buy a PS4, this has caused more stress than my 6 year old PS3 ever has!
Thank you, feel free to ask any questions I'll be here all day (not gaming) Haha!

Hmm.. did they have you go to Nvidia and download the latest drivers? I know you called Nvidia but you didn't specify what version of their driver they had you install. If that doesn't work, did you create a restore disc/usb using alienware's respawn? If not see if you can (not sure if you can because you 'upgraded' to windows 10). Click on alienware respawn and then click on the 'create restore' option (or something like that).

Windows 10 has new drivers but not all cards support the latest drivers.
Several GF100 GF200 GF300 GF400 series are END OF LIFE END OF SUPPORT NO MORE UPDATES EVER.
As are all the previous Geforce 8600 9400 9600 9800 and the earlier 5200 5500 6200 7300 7600 7800 7900 etc.

Yeah, I reinstalled the latest drivers from their website using a link they provided for me and also have now tried a much later version linked by Dell to test to see if these old versions would make a difference. And ill have a look about creating a backup using Alienware respawn thanks for the suggestion.

Hi, this sounds very interesting! Could this be linked with my issue Im not sure how what you've stated would effect me, please elaborate! Thanks!

You're not alone on this issue. The official nVidia forums are full of angry people who are encountering this issue since the last driver release (but honestly, a big chunk of 2015 has witnessed some spectacularly awful drivers from them). Like you, I cannot play any game for more than five minutes without the driver crashing (I have a GT 640). I had zero issues with the previous driver (however, the one before that driver was so bad my entire PC was crashing randomly!), but once I installed the latest set all games that use Direct 3D crash within 5 minutes. Rolling back hasn't helped me, but I see some people that have rolled way back (i.e., drivers from early in the year) found a set that works. Not a lot of good stuff going on with nVidia right now. :(
My only suggestion is wait for the next set of drivers (hopefully by next week), or upgrade your GPU, preferably with a non-nVidia card. And I don't say that last bit lightly - the vast majority of my video cards have been nVidia - but right now they are going through such a bad period that one PC pundit I read called their recent drivers "landmines." :(

Oh god that doesn't sound good. Are they working on fixes to this issue then if its known? I mean I've rolled back to Driver 311 from the current 358? I think that's right I'm only guessing at the minute and yeah still no fix.
I was actually coming very close to paying for 8.1 to be re-installed on disc from scratch to be honest. Would it be better just to wait?

I would wait. On November 10, Fallout 4 is getting released. Usually when there is an anticipated game coming out nVidia releases a set of new drivers optimized for that game. So I am expecting we will see a new set of drivers released in the next week or so (fingers crossed). Hopefully, this set of drivers will address the myriad complaints they have received on their forums (check out the master thread for an idea of the range of problems - it's now 37 pages of sadness). If not...I am not sure what to do. I read on the forum that even some people who have updated their cards to new models still experience various problems. It could well be that there is some sort of conflict between nVidia's drivers and Windows 10 that will take time to resolve. Or it could just be that nVidia is getting really sloppy in the quality department. Who knows?
Again, I would wait the week or so to see what the new drivers bring us. If that fails to help then it might be time to try some other options. Personally, I might just go back to board games. LOL!

I'm from the "Been there, done that" crowd. I rolled back to Win 7 after spending several days trying to get my video straightened out. It was my only cure. I did it a few days ago and no problems since. Trust me, I beat my head against the wall trying to get my Aurora R3 to run video problem free under Win 10, and it just wouldn't. Period. I'm thinking about upgrading to some newer GPU's and if I do, I "may" give Win 10 another try.

Well, nVidia released a new set of drivers this week and the problem still persisted. Any game that uses Direct 3D crashed. So, I had enough. I pulled out my 640 GT and put in my two or three year old Radeon 6770 HD and loaded the newest Catalyst drivers. Guess what? NO PROBLEMS with any of my games that were crashing with my nVidia card. This can only mean one of three things:
1) The card was faulty. This is unlikely, though, because the card ran fine for everything (web surfing, video streaming, etc.) but playing 3D games (2D games like Distant Worlds ran fine). So I doubt it was a problem with the card.
2) nVidia's quality control is gone and they are now releasing "certified" drivers that aren't certified for anything but top tier nVidia cards.
3) nVidia has stopped supporting a wide range of older cards without warning their owners of the fact. A conspiracy theorist might be led to believe that this is a deliberate attempt to force gamers to update their hardware (I do find it interesting that my card functioned fine BUT for modern 3D-based games).
So, my advice is going to have to be to upgrade your video card as it does not appear to be a Windows 10 issue per se. Whether you upgrade to a newer nvidia card or go to AMD, that is up to you. Honestly, this whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth so when the time comes for me to go with a new card, I probably will now stick with AMD unless I can get a really, really good deal on a comparable nVidia. See what is going on in the world of gaming these days, I suspect this is just the first of many shady things that might be coming down from nVidia (strike that, the first was that Gameworks scandal from a few months back). So...yeah.

Jesus.. looks like no PC gaming for me for a long time then.. I'm not experienced with changing hardware, hence the reason I bought Alienware at its price. Thanks for the advice, I'll look into it more when I feel up to it, with the trouble recently with the PC I've given up totally on PC gaming, not worth the stress or money!

Windows 7? Earliest I had on mine was 8, don't think that would help me :emotion-4: I'm on 8 now which is what I bought the PC with, I would've assumed this would be the fix but no.. meh
