NVidia GeForce FX 5200 problem

Hi,

I have been talking to Dell Techs for several days now, and the only thing they can suggest is to wipe my system and reload everything.

I am hoping that I don't have to do that as it seems like a video card problem.

I have Dell Dimension DM 4600, Intel Pentium 4 CPU, Windows XP, NVidia GeForce 5200 Video Card.

When I try to play a video or a game or anything that seems to require lots of power or whatever (yeah, I am computer illiterate), the screen will flicker black off and on (in no particular pattern) then go totally black.  I have to turn off the computer and turn it on again.  Sometimes it goes to a blue screen that says

Problem file:  NV4_disp

I have deleted NVidia drivers and downloaded the ugraded driver from their website (77.72 version) and earlier versions, I have loaded the video drivers from my Dell Resource CD, I have taken my computer configurations back to an earlier date, I have deleted XP Service Pack 2 (which now causes a Window System Error - - There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network - - whatever that means).

Anyway, I can't think of anything else to do.

HELP!

The 5200 is a low end video card, you might consider upgrading it.

Hi,

Someday I would like to update this video card, but my system is only about a year old, and the card should still work, right?

It should work fine on most games as long as the graphics settings are all turned down, although don't expect to be able to play UT2k4 or BF2 etc... It may be a heat problem. I would consider picking up the Artic Cooling nV Silencer. It's about $18 shipped from newegg.com and will keep your entire system running cooler.

You need to INSTALL Directx 9.0c and the Video drivers for that card.
Sometimes the latest and greatest is not the best approach.

However the 7xxx series has a WHQL version. I would use those.

Really strange.  When I tried to download DirectX 9.0c, during the "installation of components" stage, I got the message:

a cabnet file necessary for installation cannot be trusted

What does this mean?  How do I fix it?

Right now I have DirectX 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902).

Ummm, you said " However the 7xxx series has a WHQL version."  What is WHQL version?  I assume you are talking about the Nvidia driver update (I hope).

Thanks for your help.

hmmm before i ditched my fx5200 i had a similar problem. it was running fine on the 71.89 (or whatever) driver but when i tried instal the 7.7.7.2 driver my monitor kept flickering and it wouldnt let me set my monitor back to the native resolution. so i did a system restore to the day before i installed the new drivers and it worked fine. now i got a 6600gt that works great on the newest nvidia drivers
