Need Help Installing new DVD Drive

I have a Dell Studio XPS.  Wanted to install a better dvd burner, but cannot for the life of me see how to do it.  There simply is not enough room to slide the existing drive out and the new one in.  It looks like I would have to literally take the computer apart to accomplish it.  I must say, I am very disappointed.  Doing this sort of upgrade was a peace of cake with my old dell.

Hi dzinn1264, Hope this helps. See HERE for more details. You did not say what model of Studio XPS, so I picked the 435MT.

Replacing an Optical Drive

  1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin.

  2. Remove the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

  3. Remove the front panel (see Replacing the Front Panel).

1

optical drive

  1. Disconnect the power cable and the data cable from the back of the optical drive.

NOTE: If you are uninstalling the only optical drive in your computer and will not replace it at this time, disconnect the data cable from the system board and set it aside.

  1. Remove the two screws securing the optical drive to the chassis.

  2. Push and slide the optical drive out through the front of the computer.

  3. If you are not replacing the drive:

    1. Replace the drive panel insert (see Replacing the Drive Panel Insert).
    1. Go to step 12.
  4. If you are replacing the optical drive or installing a new one, slide the drive into place.

  5. Align the screw holes in the optical drive with the screw holes in the optical drive bay.

  6. Replace the two screws that secure the optical drive to the chassis.

  7. Connect the power and data cables to the optical drive.

  8. Replace the front panel (see Replacing the Front Panel).

  9. Replace the computer cover (see Replacing the Computer Cover).

  10. Connect your computer and devices to their electrical outlets, and turn them on.

NOTE: If you installed a new drive, see the documentation that came with the drive for instructions on installing any software required for drive operation.
