Need someone to help with my Vostro 400

Hi,

I'm new here. I've got a Vostro 400 and I've been gaming some. I've got an Intel Core 2 Duo e6550 CPU PLGA775 on motherboard with an Intel(R) G33/G31/P35/P31 Express Chipset. I was looking around the internet and it seems I can only find some information about my model of motherboard. I've used the Dell system detect utility and I've used the Intel SIU but both can't tell me what the motherboard is. I would like a GPU that's a good fit to upgrade to. I've found a better CPU on ebay.ca Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3 GHz and all I want to know is if this CPU will fit and which GPU's would be good?

Well thank you for that ejn63. It was helpful. I was right about the cpu, but every website that I've viewed all say the same thing. lga775 socket, when intel says my cpu is a plga775. I am certain that the E6850 @ 3 ghz with fit and turn over. But it's the gpu that gets to me. I've found some info about what was originally used as a discrete gpu and a 512mb GeForce 8800gt was used. Unfortunately, that just won't function properly in today's world. I need more out of a GPU. Currently, I'm using a NVidia GTX 650 Ti which isn't really the best card for this Vostro 400, but it works. So what would I use for a GPU today?

Okay. So I've looked around and found out through pny.com that a good alternative to the Geforce 8800gt would be NVIDIA Quadro M5000. I may be wrong.

QUADRO cards are not for gaming.

Since You have PCI-E 2.0 bus any card you get will be hampered by the bus bandwidth.

Geforce 740 or 750 TI would work fine. 650TI would require a new power supply.

The 8800GT is quite old now but its a single slot card.

Hi Speedstep.

Thanks for posting. I've looked into the gtx 740 and 750 ti, and they are good alternatives to the gtx 650TI. But they are PCIe 3.0. If I were to use a single slot, I would have to go with Quadro K620 or Quadro K1200, depending on the monitor I would be using. Currently, I have a DVI hp pavilion f1903 using a DVI-I cable. I would have to go with the k620 to use my current monitor. Would you happen to know if the CPU e6850 @ 3ghz would fit into my dell vostro 400?

If you look at the Chart in the previous post the 650TI shows 34FPS  4th Blue bar from the bottom.

the 750TI  shows 41.2 FPS the Purple bar in the middle.  So Yes the 750TI is a better card and uses LESS power than the 650T

I.

So, I've reached out to the supplier of the cpu E6850 @ 3ghz and no reply. I'm still not sure if this will fit before I buy it. The gpu is finale It will have to be the Quadro M2000 because I'm going to be building a gaming pc shortly and I'll just use the Vostro 400 for a backup computer.
