New Graphics Card questions.

Hello everyone. I am planning to get order a new GTX 970 soon but before I do I have a few question hopefully some kind, knowledgeable people can answer. Right now I am using a GTX 750 ti superclocked. This one to be exact.

Before I go on I should post my specs so you can help me better.

My first question is, I am planning on getting this new GTX 970,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121912

(Hopefully I'm posting these link correctly, because they look weird in this post ATM heh)

The problem is as you can see here in this thread,

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19609790

The Dell Inspiron 3847 desktop doesn't have that much room for graphics cards. Which is why I go for the compact sized ones. Now in that thread according to the OP, thankfully the large card he bought fit. Now, the worry I'm having with the card I want to order is not the length, but the height.

Both the card I have and the card Op ordered are around 4.38 in height. The card I want to order is 4.80 in height. So while I know length wise it will fit, i need to know its not too tall. I know it might not seem like a big difference to some, but I'm still very new to PC parts and all.

My first experience out of integrated graphics was a few months ago when I ordered and installed a new graphics card and power supply. Which I hope I did well because I cant barely play dragon age origins on medium setting without it lagging out sometimes, and that's an older game for my card so Idk why it does that. Maybe I did something wrong? I hope not.

So I'm hoping maybe someone with the same desktop or someone who is familiar with the space of the desktop could tell me if the card could fit, if not any GOOD (one that wont break after two weeks) GTX 970 that CAN fit would be great. I know the one that the OP in that thread ordered fit, but some of the reviews say some scary things so idk. Ill definitely be getting a damage protection plan.

Before I ask my second question id like to have this one wrapped up. Its a simple one but it all depends on the card I order.

To anyone who took the time to read all this to try to help me, thank you so very much in advance.

The ASUS GTX970-DCMOC-4GD5 GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 HDCP Video card as shown in your link, should fit the Inspiron 3847 MT chassis just fine, but you will need to replace the power supply as this card requires a supplementary 8-pin EPS power connector and a 500w/600w PSU, instead of the default 300w unit.

Note: As the card is a double width unit, you will loose the use the PCIe x1 slot next to the card.

You are correct, it is a typo, should have read Inspiron 3847, I have edited the post to reflect this.

Regards to the 750w Thermaltake Toughpower TPD-0750M - SLI power supply shown in your post, should be fine, it has a the PCI-E 8-pin [PCI-E 6+2pin x 4] supplementary power connector, that the ASUS GTX970-DCOC video card requires.

The dimensions of the Inspiron 3847 MT, are 14.50"H x 7.0"W x 17"D, for more info go to page 5 here:

Thank you so very much for your answer, you have no Idea how much it puts my mind at ease, since to my knowledge, there is no way of getting a refund after you get your card, just a replacement, which would do me no good since it still would not fit.

Just want to clarify two things you said.

You said it would fit the Inspiron 3834 MT Chassis, you meant the Inspiron 3847 correct? Which is what I have. Maybe 3834 is another name for it or it was just a typo, but, you can never be too careful. I am sorry If this is a dumb question.

On the subject of the power supply, I bought this one along with the 750 ti a few months back.

I hope it will do.

Also If I may ask, how did you find out it would fit just fine? Not that I do not believe you, I would just like to know so I could check myself In future cases, so I would not need to bother anyone with these questions. Maybe a site that gives you the exact capacity cases have. I tried searching for one but, unfortunately, came up short. I also apologize if this is a dumb question. Pretty sure there are 9 year olds that know more about this than I do.

Seeing as how this thread is so new and my other question is pretty related, I don't think I should create a new one for this question. I don't really know the forum etiquette here, but I assume I can just use my same thread for this question.

I've read that when you replace a graphics card (This is my first time doing so) you have to delete some Drivers and go through some hoops before you do. I want to replace my Nvidia GTX 750 with a Nvidia GTX 970.

Seeing as how they're from the same company or however you would call it, I don't really know how much I need to delete, and I cant seem to get a straight answer through google. There are some people telling me to delete things that aren't even on my computer, I guess since they're older posts.

Can someone whose done the same thing or knows what to do tell me what exactly are the steps for replacing a Nvidia card with another newer Nvidia Card before you physically install it. I'm very new to all this and very much appreciate the help I've already received here.

Thank you so much.

1) First unless you already have done so, upgrade the power supply, followed by checking the system for correct operation.

2) Uninstall the existing drivers, using the Programs and Features utility, that can be found in the Control Panel. and remove the 'old' card and install the new card and reconnect the monitor

3) This Owner's Manual has the details for removing and installing a new video card in the Inspiron 3847 [page 16+] and follow the procedures in the following post.
