No More Spyware?
Hi,
Am I imagining this, or have incidents of spyware nearly disappeared? I've always run Ad-Aware on a nearly daily basis, and kept it up-to-date, but it occurred to me today that it hasn't found anything in a couple of months! (While I'm a cautiously "normal" surfer/downloader, I can't say the same for my nephew. After his visits I had become used to AdAware finding loads of spyware.) So, what happened? Have the companies who send out spyware "wised up?"

I suspect that the change is from practicing safer computing rather than, a slacking of the malware providers. If you notice, AdAware has had only a single update in months so this could be a factor as well. In that same time period, Spybot Search & Destroy has had dozens of updates. The reason for the lack of response from AdAware is reported to be the concentration of their efforts on development of version 6.0 (said to be much more robust as well as faster).
I doubt there will ever be a reversal of the current *spyware* trend. Detection & removal tools well more likely become a *standard* much the same as antivirus program presently are and operating system developers are beginning to take note of the need to address these pests as well.

SpyareBlaster is a newer tool that really helps fight against spyware and some viruses. I use SpyBot S&D still, but I have really liked SpywareBlaster's take on things - stop them before they happen. Updated quite a bit and stops 50+ spyware items before they can even get to your machine.

Thanks everybody. I downloaded both Spybot S&D (seems a bit confusing at first glance), and SpywareBlaster. It'll be interesting to see how they perform.
