NotePad & WordPad unreadable fonts

When I try to open some files using these programs I encounter unreadable fonts like the following.
Notepad: WtÆøzÎTß?¿U?žQ§ðàBFÅ”Ž
WordPad: þÅýtofãÑšN FN
I'm using W98/SE and IE5 in case it helps.
No need to say I have no idea how to fix the problem, THANK YOU.

falcon66,

Are you encountering this problem with all files you open in Wordpad and Notepad? If they are not text files (such as .txt and .doc files) what you are seeing is programming language rendered into ASCII. This would be the case, for example, if you were trying to open a .sys file.

Notepad, for the most part, will read ASCII Text files, i.e., true text files with a .txt extension. Wordpad will read a variety of .txt, .doc, .wri, and rich text format, .rtf files, i.e., text files created using some of the standard word processors. Neither will read a .dat (database) file for instance or open and read a 'cookie'. What kind of file are you trying to read, what's the extension?

Thanks Bob. It was a .dat file, I think, trying to use the troubleshooting mail stored information using the maintenance tab in OE 5. The folder's name is POP3 under C/Windows/Application Data/Identities/...
HOWEVER, the only thing I did was click to open the file. I thought the computer was smart enough to create each file in the program that will open it.

Falcon: I personally don't know of any application that will read a .dat file since they are pretty much specific to the application that generated them and programmers use various techniques for that.

I've found that computers are as dumb as a block of silicon, but really really fast........
