Unfortunately, I never installed the .NET (or as I call it the .NOT) framework...

So at least in my case, that can't be the problem.

This seems to be a widespread suite of related problems that Dell needs to address. I have been plagued by it for the past two to three days.

1) NotifyAlert.exe cannot initialize

2) wmiapsrv.exe needs to close

3) Cannot uninstall Dell Support

I've read the whole thread to date (8/21/03) and my problem with notifyalert.exe is slightly different.

When it is launched and running on my XP desktop, it is consuming 98-99% of the cpu and it must also be locking system resources. This prevents my other software, (16bit and 32bit) which communicate via DDE, to continue. I don't even get any more DDE timeouts. I've had to manually kill the process from the task manager to kill it. This is not aaceptable because the other software must continuously run.

I hope that they can resolve this. They could at least lauch the process at the lowest priority level so that other processes can continue and have it kill itself if a certain amount of time has passed.

I work for a corporation where we've purchased 30 or so with more on the way Dimension 4800.  First thing we do is uninstall everything except XP.  Seen it a few times where Dell Support didn't want to uninstall.  But now seeing this popup error.  Haven't figured out a way to make it stop. Surely their are more people out thier getting this.  Come on Dell.  You're Dell you're supposed to be on top of these things.

I'm getting the same error message on my Inspiron5100.  It pops up for some reason or another, even when I am not working on the computer.

NotifyAlert.exe-Application Error

The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135).  Click on OK to terminate the application.

Yep!  I get the same annoying NotifyAlert.exe failed to initialize too.  It appears on startup and random times of day when computer is sitting idle.  It doesn't seem to effect the computers normal operation.  Right before it crashes the program spikes up to 90% cpu(about 2 secconds on my 1.8ghz).  Most of the time the program uses approximatly 0% cpu.  If somone could design a patch for NotifyAlert.exe I would be happy so I can save my self an extra mouse cilck from time to time.

To all,

The Dell Support package functioned before the Microsoft Update. My question, was it a "critical" or "recommended" update?

August 28th, 2003 19:00

Okay, so the most recent Microsoft patch that came across broke something...  Not the first time, definately won't be the last.  And if I remember correctly, the update was a critical one.

However, the problem isn't that the latest patch broke something (I already figured that out at the beginning of this thread)...  The problem is that Dell hasn't bothered to fix it after 3 weeks now.  Either by phone, email, or this thread...  We (the customers) are being ignored.  Besides, what difference does it make whether or not it was a critical update or recommended one?  Are you suggesting that we shouldn't install recommended updates because it might break something?  Where in my documentation or my contract with Dell did it ever say that?

Oh and by the way, I went to the support web site for Dell and followed (or at least tried to) the directions for re-installing Dell Support 2.0.  The links on that knowledge base page don't even work.  I think one of them was click on this link to go to the downloads page, and when I clicked on it, I got a 404 Page Not Found error.  I then navigated to the downloads page, and the directions continued with select your OS, select APPLICATIONS, and select your language.  Then on the next page select the Dell Support 2.0 package.  Problem is that the next page is empty, no applications for my OS exist at this time.  So I went back and selected ALL, and the next page had a bunch of SCSI drivers and some Dell Diagnostic software, but the Dell 2.0 Support package wasn't among the selections.

So providing that Dell does fix the Dell 2.0 Support package, where am I supposed to go download it so that it can be re-installed?

Chris,

Thanks for listening.  To my knowledge I have not gotten any updates.  I have updates turned off because I don't trust Microsoft.

Who gets notified?  Notified of what?  Isn't this a Dell program?

Regards,

Rod

Chris M., you're going to respond to the rest of the questions he asked too, right?  I didn't uninstall anything, so I don't need the reinstall instructions, but I do want to know if there is some kind of an actual fix coming for the problem (as i'm sure everyone else in this message board does too...).  We appreciate your help.

Why doesnt everyone just uninstall the Dell Alert program? You dont really need it...just turn on windows updating.

It's a shame that the entire prior thread has been deleted.

Again.. in my situation, the NotifyAlert.exe crashes and when it does it hangs the subsystem. I have 16bit and 32 bit programs that must run all of the time. The unhandled exeption in NotifyAlert.exe hangs the system with "Common Language Debugging Services" message box. Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. ProcessID... ThreadID...  Click OK or Cancel.

Would someone that is having this problem do the following: click on start/run - type in msconfig - click on the startup tab and see if notifyalert is in there. if it is, remove the check mark from the box and restart. YOu will get a message after restarting, put a check in the box about stop bugging me and close. If it isn't...back to square one.

I'm another person with this problem. Roughly twice a day, and also some possibility that it's loading my machine. After reading through the thread, I phoned Dell. Waited on the phone for 30 minutes. Endless irrelevant pitches about using the support website.

A human at last! I asked why the AlertView.exe -> Settings button doesn't work, as I want to turn off AlertNotify. 10 minutes of putzing around followed, during which it was suggested that I do a system restore to a time before the critical update for Blaster. No thanks, I said, but maybe I should just rename NotifyAlert.exe to XNotifyAlert.exe. Another 10 minutes of putzing around. Finally the Dell guy said he didn't know and would forward me to an OS expert.

I got forwarded instead to a number that asks if I want to purchase a service agreement. I said yes, although I really just want to get to a human. Waiting 20 minutes so far. Listening to Claire de Lune. Well, at least it's not Rap.

OK, got through to a human. She offered to transfer me to a hardware expert. Hardware, I said, for a software problem? Hold on, she says. Baroque music now for 10 minutes.

OK, she comes back on and says that since I've had the machine for 9 months I'm not covered for Dell software. They would provide service on a fee basis. No thanks, I said.
