Hum, my latest NotifyAlert problem disappeard after I restored a missing .dll file. I installed SpyBot (to find and remove some Hijack software) and as a pleasant by-product, it told me I had a missing file called msxml3a.dll. I found a copy of it on the web (couldn't find it on my XP install CD) and once I downloaded it and re-booted my PC I haven't had the problem since. This may not have anything to do with the various NotifyAlert problems in this thread, but it fixed mine. The msxml3a.dll file should be in the %systemroot%\SYSTEM32\ directory (for me that's C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msxml3a.dll).
I am yet another irritated Dell Inspiron (8200) user, who has this same problem. I just managed to successfully uninstall the Dell Support Software. I tried installing 2.0, but it complained about .NET not being there - which I am not prepared to install! The question I have is - what am I losing by not having the support package installed ? Does anyone know ?
I have an 8250 and am getting the same error message, NotifyAlert.exe-Application Error: The Application failed to initalize properly (0xc0000135). Click ok to terminate. I have tried everything I can think of, but not being a computer whiz doesn't help and Dell support is impossible to get hold of via the telephone. I sat and listened to the same recording telling me I had the msblast virus for about an hour and a half then gave up, knowing that I did not have it. I also noticed on my system that if I am playing a video game and the notifyalert error pops up, my game instantly crashes back to the desktop, which bites because I purchased my Dell for gaming. I am at a total loss as to what to do because It's impossible to get any response from Dell at all. I stll owe on this piece of junk and may refuse to make anymore payments until they at least respond to my problem. Those Dell comercials that show Dell troubleshooters working on into the late hours of the night to help customers is laughable if not sad. What a terrible company.
No one ever said that you had to reinstall this program. The information was given to clear the error and get the program working. If you do not want it by all means do not reinstall it.
As stated in previous posts on this thread try un-installing the current version of the Dell support application. Then download and install the latest version. If you are unable to un-install see if you have the .NET framework installed and un-install it as well. Download and install the latest versions of these programs and install both. The problem should go away.
I did that. Uninstalled .NET (in order to properly remove Dell Support). Then tried to re-install Dell Support 2.0, and it told me I needed the .NET framework. So on Friday before going home, I went to Windows Update page and selected the .NET framework. I figured I'd let it download over the weekend. On Monday morning however, the download hadn't even started. So all weekend long it was sitting there. I tried again several times during the day and night over a period of a week and a half, and still I can't download the .NET framework.
I finally gave up, and I don't care if Dell Support 2.0 is on my system anymore or not.
The frightening thing to me is that we now have users trying to troubleshoot the problem and solve it ourselves. What happened to the Dell "dude" that is supposed to be providing tech support (Chris M.)? Is someone working on a fix to this, or what? Even if there isn't an answer from Dell yet, at least a little "We're looking into it and will get back to you" would be nice Chris M.! Thanks.
Actually, yes.. Dell Support did instruct me to uninstall and reinstall this application in order to correct this problem... Attached is the email that I received about 2 weeks ago...
Dear Mr. Elsner,

Mr. Elsner, I would like to tell you that you need to uninstall and reinstall Dell Support software to resolve this issue. I am sorry you've had a problem with your Dell, but we will get it fixed as soon as possible.

Well, that doesn't work... But once again, it doesn't matter anymore (at least to me)... My company still orders Dell computers, but I can promise you this, that as soon as one arrives here, I remove the Dell Support Application immediately. The last thing I need is one of my customers calling me about this stupid error message and I can't tell them how to fix it other than to uninstall it.
Well, I spoke too soon. Guess what's back. It was fixed until the latest Windows Update about 3 days ago. Now I have the problem again. If I understand correctly, NotifyAlert is to Dell what Windows Update is to Windows - it will contact Dell and notify you of any issues related to your Dell PC (hardware, software, etc.) and allow you to download drivers or other software. I don't believe it will adversely affect your PC if it isn't installed and/or running. It seems like that for most people reading this problem thread it would be better to not have it installed. I also think that if you are interested in Dell fixes, you can go to their web site and get them without NotifyAlert.
I just configured two new systems, both with XP home, by uninstalling both Dell Support and Dell Solution Center. A little early to tell if they will have the problem, but I was able to uninstall it. You might want to check your registry under HKCU/Software/Dell/Alert and see if there is still a key there. It could be that the key is there, and there is nothing to point to. After I uninstalled, there was no longer a key for Dell at all under Current User.

<< type in msconfig - click on the startup tab and see if notifyalert is in there >>
It's not there..
I'm assuming that NotifyAlert.exe is being shelled out by another application.. but I can't find it.

LittleAdvice,
Why would I want Dell Support on my computer?
How can you advise someone to install a program if you don't know what it does?
If everyone just follows the path of least resistance, we will all be bowing of the direction of Seattle shortly.

Hello rvcslc,
That is also my guess about the function of "NotifyAlert" and perhaps "Support".
How can I turn these off? They don't show up in Startup or Services in MSConfig (XP).
