Optiplex 5040 Small Form Factor won't boot after Dell software updates
Hi,
I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex 5040 Small Form Factor. It has the Windows 10 creators update. I ran Windows Update on it, then ran the Dell Command Update to download and install any recommended updates. After doing this, the computer failed to boot completely when I restart it. The computer would attempt an automatic repair, then fail. The only thing I could do to get past it was to reset the computer (reinstall Windows) entirely. I didn't pay attention to any of the Dell updates that were being installed, but the second time, I didn't install them and the computer seems to boot just fine.
Any ideas? Is there a bad Dell update?
I've checked this list, and the Optiplex 5040 appears to have been test with the Windows 10 creators update: www.dell.com/.../computers-tested-for-upgrade-to-windows-10-creators-update

Hard to know... Could have been anything from a bad Win 10 image on the HDD, or a bad or failed Windows update, etc...
There have been bad Microsoft updates for Creators Build. My Dell laptop stopped booting after CB was installed and I ended up having to wipe the drive and do a clean install of CB and my sofware.
Now that you're running again, you might want to make a full image of the HDD on an external drive or USB stick. That way you can quickly repair any future update issues. If you have a USB HDD, check its manufacturer's site to see if they offer a free version of imaging software. I know Seagate offers DiscWizard and that's what I used to image my laptop after everything was reinstalled... :emotion-5:
