Optiplex 580 solid amber with 2 3 4 blinking led

Hello,

I have an optiplex 580 with a solid amber light and 2,3,4 leds blinking.  I can not get the desktop to post or give me a beep code or anything.  Originally, I ordered a new MB to swap with the old one and that did not fix the problem.  So I tried another MB from another Opti 580 I had that I have tested and it worked before I took the MB for the swap.  Once I put the known good MB in the Opti with the problem it didnt fix the issue and the solid amber with 2 3 4 blinking is still occurring.

SO, I decided that maybe there was something connected to the MB that is the issue.  I have disconnected every thing except the power cable from the PSU to the Mobo(24-pin) and the CPU chip (4-pin), and I have left the I/O board connected to the MB as well to turn on the tower.  I still get the same LED error.

Next, I tried replacing the I/O board with a known working/new I/O board with everything(HDD, CD/DVD, memory) unplugged.  Still the same issue.

Next I tried replacing the PSU with everything(HDD, CD/DVD, memory) unplugged, still same LED codes.

So, I have replaced everything minus the HDD and the CD/DVD drives(but they aren't even plugged in) and I can't get the system to POST or give me anything other than a solid amber power LED and a blinking 2, 3, 4 blinking diag LEDs.

I have tried placing the password jumper for the BIOS on the other two pins on the MB but that did not do anything.  I have also taken out the CMOS battery and tried to boot but that didn't help either.  WHAT is the DEAL with this system?  Any response or suggestions are welcome.  Part of me wanted to get this posted somewhere because I have not seen this problem posted anywhere else.

Thank you.

Nothing is attached but the power cable to the PSU.

I have found the solution - CPU is bad.  Replace the CPU chip if you have exhausted every other option like I have.  Most likely that will fix the issue or at least get a post out ot the machine to point in the right direction.

Hi PCRepairTech,

Here are the manuals for that model <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>. I'd start there.

Lights 2, 3, and 4 point to a USB failure. And a solid amber light just means to check the diagnostic lights. So I would think a replacement motherboard was the right direction. But it could be a bad device attached to the USB. Have you tried different mouse/keyboards?
