Optiplex 620 heatsink compatibility with other systems

I have a Optiplex 780 MT and I want to upgrade the processor, from a core 2 duo e8400 to a core 2 quad q9650, but I have the aluminium heatsink, so I have to change the heatsink with the copper one.

I found a cooler with the copper base heatsink, but it comes from a optiplex 620 system.

My question is: will at the entire cooler or at least the heatsink install and work in my system ?

That looks like DELL Optiplex GX620 745 755 MT J9761 Heatsink and Shroud.

I'm guessing that it probably works fine with 760 and 780 as well.

They all seem to use the MR SMITH TOWER Case.

I'm saying this because the aluminum version Optiplex 755 760 780 Tower CPU Heatsink HR004 J7109 is common across 755 to 780.

HEATSINK D9729     SHROUD J9761  usually come as one piece.

So you take out the old. Put in the new.  You would also clean the paste and I would recommend adding arctic silver but not an entire tube just a tiny amount spread over the top of the cpu.   J9761 is specifically for the Mini Tower.   Desktop, SFF, and USFF all use different shroud and heatsink and fan.

The Optiplex 780 was validated to use the following =
N652J Q9650 Yorkfield 3.00GHz, 12MB, 1333MHz

With the following heatsink =
JY385

We cannot know if the Optiplex 620 heatsink will work.

I found this post : en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19593014

Now I'm petty sure that it is compatible.

But I have more concerns : is there any risk of using a second hand heatsink ?

and will the fan that I already have take care of it, or should I replace it ?

and should I replace the plastic case also ?

I can't upload the photos, cuz they are to high res but the plastic case has a funnel like shape and on the label it says : CN-0K2NV1-72449-085-0BIE-A00 DP/N 0K2NV1, I tried to google it but doesn't find anything. And the heatsink inside has staright and leveled spikes. Now I'm concerned that this is not gonna work again!

Maybe I'm gonna buy it anyway and at least try before anything else.

I've read that you NEED a copper base heatsink for processors with 95w TDP

HR004 is the aluminum version but has the holes in the top for the copper heatpipe version.  DELL Performance Heatsink J9761

HEATSINK D9729     SHROUD J9761  for the tower.

K2NV1 shroud won't fit the heatsink from the 620.  Its also not a copper heatsink.  You will find that the hinge and 2 screws work for either heatsink.

I meant to say that I already have the K2NV1 shroud and I wannna upgrade with the copper one, but thanks for explaining everything for me.

So I would need to change the shroud also, and then everything should work fine, even with the fan that I already have ?
