Optiplex 740 CPU upgrade help
Hi, I have an old Dell Optiplex 740 mini tower with an Athlon x2 3800+ processor in it now. Latest BIOS version (2.2.7) available. According to the manual, the only way I can use a Phenom in it is if it is "enhanced". Apparently mine is not, as it does not have the word "enhanced" in the startup screen or BIOS anywhere.
So is my only upgrade path another Athlon X2? If so, what is the fastest one the PC will recognize. Thank you.

The above processors are been tested on this system and the Athlon 64 x2 6000+ is not tested by Dell.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. No chance of at least the Athlon 64 X2 6000 series working? I realize the cooler would be an issue due to the 125W CPU, but do you think one of the 6000 series would be recognized?

I had read a similar thread:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/t/19494756
and bought a 2.7GHz Athlon on the basis of the information that seemed to be coming from a Dell OptiPlex 740 technical manual - are Dell held to account over incorrect information on the community boards or should I have investigated further?
I've bought the 5000+ 2.6GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 as suggested on this thread - any comments on this?
