Hi eMicros,

Sorry to digg out this old thread of yours.

I have exactly the same problem with you. old Dell optiplex, recently upgrade to win 7, get error message "rear fan failure", press F1 to continue without a problem..

Can i ignore the error message (press F1 everytime i start up!!)  and live on with my life ? Or this is the real hardware issue that i need to replace the fan  to prevent overheating in the future ???

Thanks!

I have the Optiplex 755 USFF. I've received the Rear Fan Failure alert intermittently in the last 7 days (3 times). Is the fan on the hard drive caddie the rear fan? Also, any advice on whether I should replace now, or should I check something before replacing? I ran diagnostic and no problems were indicated. Every time I got alert, I restarted and didn't get new alert. Haven't done any work on the system for over a month (added RAM about 30 days ago). Thanks!

The USFF rear fan is on the hard drive caddy.

  3. Remove the hard drive (see Removing a Hard Drive).

  4. Turn the hard drive upside down, so that the hard drive fan is visible in the bottom of the drive bracket.

  5. To remove the hard drive fan:

    1. Lift the release tab on the back panel of the fan.

    1. Rotate the fan in the opposite direction from that indicated by the arrow on the back panel of the fan.

    2. Lift to remove the fan and its back panel from the hard drive bracket.

Replacing a Hard Drive Fan

  1. Follow the instructions in Before You Begin.

  2. Remove the hard drive (see Hard Drive).

  3. Remove the hard drive fan:

    1. Remove the screw that secures the fan release tab to the hard drive bracket.

    1. Press down on the fan release tab, and then slide the fan towards the front of the computer so that its side tabs are free of the corresponding slots in the hard drive bracket.

    2. Lift to remove the fan from the hard drive bracket.

    3. Unplug the fan.

I have the same error, but the fan is working. In fact, there is something wrong with the fan, it never stops working!! But, I get the same error of no rear  fan detected

Hi folks,

Know this post is very old, but just ran into the same problem.

As usual  a lot of useless expert advice all over, without any answers.

Here is what I found ... look closely with a magnifying glass at the little plastic tab on the motherboard.

If you can see more than 1/8" light between them, very gently push the plastic clip towards the mb.

You may have to go side to side. This makes the pins stick out inside the clip, so it makes contact again.

When unplugging the HD caddy you inadvertently pull the retainer clip up, and then when you reinsert it, there is no electrical connection, because they do not touch, inside the clip.

Forget about bios updates and the like, it usually is very simple.

Worked for me.
