Optiplex 760 CPU Upgrade questions
Hi I have a optiplex 760 thats using a dual core pentium (E2220) and I was wanting to upgrade to a more powerful CPU of this socket type (LGA 775).
I was looking to buy a 2.83 GHZ Core 2 Quad, forget the exact name but anyhow I am just not sure if my motherboard can support quad cores.
[ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy]. Can anyone tell me if I can put a Core 2 Quad in my machine? I am using a 630 Watt Power supply so if therre is need for a power increase I can support that. Please list the compatible CPUS that I can put in my Optiplex 760. Thanks!

It is ok, I wanted actually reference your post anyway, and probably all already know my preferences helping people with S&M wishes toward their Dells - CPU upgrading and overclocking cheap old Dells,

You choice depends on the motherboard model you have, there could be 2 choices only, to prevent guessing please (I am on the phone, cannot provide links at this time) google CPUZ, install and run, under mainboard tab there would be information about your motherboard model and your BIOS version and BIOS date, we need this information to advise correctly.
P.S. If you make a search on those forums for "Optiplex 760" and organize by most recent, on the first page you will see someone asked the same question and provided good answers, however all depends on your motherboard model, I wish I could provIDE link.

Probably not.
The Optiplex 760 was built with two different motherboards.
T674K motherboard does not support Core 2 Quad CPUs, only Core 2 Duo CPUs.
U562N motherboards support both Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo processors.
Which version is installed in the your Optiplex 760?
If the computer was shipped with a Core 2 Duo/Pentium Dual Core processor, then the motherboard is usually the T674K version.

This is interesting, i am looking for similar information but i have a problem. according to my Service Tag( and the sticker on the case) on Dells site i have a Optiplex 760. when i do the CPU Z check it shows a motherboard type of 0DG284, which according to sites is for a GX270. but my mother board only has 3 AUX slots whereas that mother board has 4. the number etched onto the board is E93839 GA0402 and that board was used in the Optiplex 780 machines. finally when i do the detect from Dells site it comes back with a completely different service tag and express service code as well as a different model of desktop. My board is definitely an E93839 GA0402 and i have an Intel Pentium 4 CPU @2.8Ghz. i still am wondering what would be the fastest processor i could upgrade this to. the machine is in great shape still.
thanks

E93839 GA0402 is a UL listing for circuit board material not a DELL motherboard part number.

First you need to find which motherboard version is installed.
Please read my post in this thread, here:

Either open the case and check the label on the motherboard, or use CPU-Z,
