Most Optiplex models have a small power supply that might need upgrading to add today's video cards. The 760 has a 235 w psu.

Hi greywolf79,

ATI Radeon HD 3450 and ATI Radeon HD 3470 graphic card were tested with Optiplex 760 at factory when it was launched. But users also installed NVidia GeForce 9800GT and ATI Radeon HD 5770. Check this link: http://dell.to/1fRUZP3

Check these links for low profile graphic card supported by Optiplex 760.

Please reply for any further help.

@ Marv G - Though you are right about the PSU being small, this is the DT (I forgot to post that in the first part, sorry). It has a 255w PSU. Not much better, but slightly.

@ Dell-Nikhil D - This is not the Tower version, so only low profile cards without the riser. I cannot find the 9800GT in a low profile card, so that one is out...

These are the video cards I was looking at...

GIGABYTE GeForce 210 Silent 1GB DDR3 DVI-I / D-Sub / HDMI Low Profile Graphics Card, GV-N210SL-1GI - Gigabyte

$34.08

Asus ATI Radeon HD6450 Silence 1 GB DDR3 VGA/DVI/HDMI Low Profile PCI-Express Video Card - EAH6450 SILENT/DI/1GD3(LP) - Asus

$39.37

Another general question about the Optiplex 760, can it use a generic PSU or is a proprietary one required? It seems pretty small in physical size (again, it is the DeskTop (DT) not tower, or slim/ultra slim).

Hi greywolf79,

I request you to private message the service tag of the system, so that I may check the system specifications and help you better.

At least for the next few days I am not able to buy new pieces but I am still going to plan. I do have a larger hard drive (came with a 80gb drive and I have a 160gb drive) but cannot figure out how to remove the hard drive... It is such a small space. I know how to remove the optical drive (already swapped the DVD-rom for a DVD RW), but I could not get the hard drive out - it was being blocked by something where the floppy/card reader goes (and that piece did not seem to come out). I did upgrade the CPU to a E7400 (came with Celeron 450).

I am interested in finding out what the max integrate video card size is. It is a Intel 4500, and it shows as a 32mb card with 1200+ mb shared memory (but how big is it really and how to change it over 32mb?)... I am still interested in getting a new video card (probably the next buy) - it must be a low profile and cheap. I am interested in the 9800gt - except it looks like it is about $100 still and does not look like a low profile version is available. Is there a low profile version of the 9800gt? If not, what is the closest in low profile that will run with a 255w PSU? I do not plan on any other expansion cards except a wifi card when able.

I bumped it up to 3gb ram also (came with 2gb).

I would suggest you get the HD 6450 HERE or the HD 6570 HERE.  There would be no reason to get an old 9800 GT.  If you have any intentions for gaming, then get the HD 6570.   Both are low profile and will work on your power supply and reasonable in cost.

I went with a more basic card than the 6450, but it was much more affordable. I can upgrade later. I went with a nVidia GT 520. I have come across a big issue though... I am trying to upgrade the hard drive, but I cannot get it to release. I looked at online items and the video tutorials all show a much easier layout. Mine has the drives on the left front (when laying open and flat). The PSU is in the back (and very close to the drives), the optical drive is over top of the hard drive. I have been able to swap the optical drive, put in a DVDRW (came with a DVD-Rom). But there is some sort of metal bracket in place over top of the hard drive that seems to be blocking the hard drive (on the bottom) from being removed.

Anyone know a good reliable site for finding out how to pull out the hard drive? I am hoping for step by step or else a really good video for this job. It is the DT model (not tower, not SFF/USFF).

Whoo hoo!!! I figured it out. I am going to try and put it back together without the piece this time to see if it will hold the drive without it.

And the GT 520 runs the one game I was wanting at medium settings, not perfect but not too bad.

Now since I am swapping out the drive, do I go with a windows vista or windows 7 load? Both are 64 bit versions, the computer has 3 gb ram right now but will have 4 gb when the new stick arrives. And as able I will upgrade the ram to be eventually at 6-8 gb.

Got the 4th stick of RAM. Now to save up for the upgrades to video and future cpu. I am surprised the hard drive is running so smoothly as it is a jury rigged laptop 2.5 inch 320 gb drive. Since it is only a 5400 rpm drive I do plan on upgrading it to a 500gb to 1tb size drive when able as well.

I am looking into getting a video card, but cheap is a requirement.

A Sapphire 6450 would be my choice and will work with your stock power supply.

I will definately look into that video card when I save some money.

I picked up a usb 150 n wireless adapter for a little over $5.

A big question, after that video upgrade I will likely save up for a better (quad) cpu. Will the stock heatsink handle a q9500/q9600?

Just a brief update...

The GT 520 worked and allowed me to play the game that everything said it would not play. However, it looks like the video card died. I am getting a fuzzy green background covering the whole screen. So I am going to try and get it RMA'ed back for repairs. I did also already purchase a ATI/AMD Radeon HD 6570 - just waiting for it to be delivered. So when that arrives I will use it in my Optiplex 760 and I will put the remanufacture GT 520 replacement in the Inspiron 530 desktop tower I am still working on.

Thank you guys for all the input - it truly is appreciated.

The Radeon HD 6570 is in the machine. It runs. I am thinking a bigger power supply would be nice so that I could try to bump the CPU up to a Core2Quad... Otherwise no real complaints about the machine.

I am still waiting for the RMA to get me a replacement to the GT520, which I will be placing in the wife's computer.

Anyone know of a PSU with 400ish watts that will definately fit in the Optiplex 760 DT model? It is the DT not the SFF/USFF/MT models.
