Optiplex 780 Ultra Slim randomly shuts down
We have several Optiplex 780 Ultra Slim towers and have started receiving complaints that some of them are randomly shutting down.
The first one I was informed of has not had the issue in a couple weeks.
The second PC would not start up the second time it shut down. I checked the manual for the blinking orange light on the power button and, after consulting Dell, was sent a new power supply and motherboard. I replaced both, but 2 weeks later, the problem occured again.. And nobody is even using the PC. I left it sitting on a desk to make sure the issue was resolved which it obviously is not.
The third and fourth PC only started having the issue within the last week.
We thought there might be an issue with dual monitors, but the issue has been a half and half deal. 2 PCs have dual monitors and 2 don't.
Is there any known issue with these PCs? We are going to look into possible power issues in the building just to make sure, but I'd like to make sure the PC end of things can be ruled out. Thanks

Ours appeared to be a video driver problem. After digging through the dump logs, we found that they all had one thing in common. So, we checked the driver installed on the PCs and found that, despite installing the correct driver before imaging, our task sequence had decided to use the older Windows update driver instead. I went around to all the PCs with the issue and updated the driver to the most recent on the Dell website. We haven't seen the problem since.

Any slim PC, whether a Dell or whatever, generally is more susceptable to heat problems. Have you ruled out heat as a potential cause?

I'm fairly sure it's not heat. The pcs are in the brackets mounted behind the monitors. None of the rooms are warmer than any other (about 70 degrees in the room) and the air circulates quite well in the rooms.

Do you have a UPS that you can connect to one of the problem units, to rule out power?
(I used to be a Regional LAN/WAN Network Manager and Hardware Help Desk Manager. I've been through these types of things trying to find out what is happening. Except it was all remote to our field offices over a phone or working with a local tech).

I will see if I can dig one up. We don't usually have smaller client size UPS. I'll let you know.

Any UPS will do, even if it's a larger size since it's temporary. Or if the UPS isn't too far away, run an extension cord to the UPS and plug the PC's power cord into the extension cord, again since it's only temporary to determine if power is the cause.
Static electricity is another possibility. We used to have static problems at some locations primarily with the female operators, due to the clothing worn (especially pantyhose).

I have put her PC on a UPS and we'll be monitoring it for the next couple days. She is a heavy user so if there are problems, we'll know pretty quick.
On a possibly related note: After installing this UPS, about 30 minutes later, her assistant experienced the same shutdown. Or rather, reboot. The PC appears to be shut down, but about a minute of black screen and it boots up again. I went into the logs and the only somewhat useful thing I found was this:

Good and Bad. That says it's not power. I found THIS thread on the Windows 7 forum about this error. Look it over as there are a couple of solutions. One probably is not applicable to the Dell as I don't think it has the option to change memory voltages.

Indeed it does not appear to be a power problem though the problem seemed to disappear for most of the week after putting it on UPS. I'll be trying a few things from the thread you mentioned.

I am also having this problem with multiple ultraslim 780's. Have called dell support a few times. they have replaced the motherboard on one and it still has issues. they also recommended updating to the latest bios version A09 but that has not helped either.
