Optiplex 790 SFF need service tag

I bought a Optiplex 790 SFF bare bones and I found out that it doesn't have a service tag anywhere on it. How can get a service tag for it? Can I get on from Dell?

Latest BIOS for OptiPlex 790 is here. Service Tag shouldn't matter...

Read/follow instructions carefully, and disable antiviral suite first if you install it in Windows.

Keep in mind there's always a small chance a BIOS update will fail and kill the motherboard. So update at your own risk...

Assuming the ST hasn't been deleted from BIOS, you should be able to find it using free version of Belarc Advisor.

EDIT: ieee488 types faster than I do! :emotion-2:

Hi NX5869,

The Service Tag is unique to the system so you can't get a new one from Dell.

If there's no sticker on the system  - check the back next to the audio ports and on the top if standing upright - then there are other ways to get the tag.

The easiest way is to open a Command Prompt window and type wmic bios get serialnumber the Service Tag will then displayed.

Alternatively go into the BIOS - press F2 on startup at the Dell logo - and it will be listed on the 1st screen that you see under System Information.

Hi NX5869,

Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.

The label will be located at two places on your system

1) top of the chassis towards the front

2) back of the chassis (near the Power port)

Are the service tag label missing from both these locations?

I've checked the front, back, sides and there's no service tag anywhere. I've already tried checking the BIOS - F12 and there's nothing there too. I need the service tag to update the BIOS. Does anyone know?

WMICFG can be used to Query this as well as Belarc Advisor.

Bios should be updated to current BEFORE attempting cpu change.

wmic bios get name, serialnumber, version

wmic csproduct get name, identifyingnumber, uuid

You can directly copy the data to a text file by right-clicking the command prompt and choosing “Mark”. Now drag the cursor to select the data and press Ctrl+C (Control key with “C”). Open the text-editor and press Ctrl+V.
