Optiplex 9020 boot issue

I have an optiplex 9020 that has a blinking cursor for about 10 to 15 seconds before the Dell splash screen and after the Dell splash screen. I have the latest BIOS and am using an SSD as the boot drive and SATA drive as a secondary drive, The bios is set to only boot the SSD. I have the sata operation set to AHCI, the RAID is disabled. This is a clean install from the Dell CD onto the SSD. I have looked through the bios but not seeing anything that would cause the issue?

Same here right out of the box.  In my case, having only the SSD in the boot list, gives "no boot device" most of the time.  Entering the BIOS, the Liteon SSD will no longer be in the list even after adding it back and resaving.  Updating the BIOS does nothing to fix.

But hitting F12, the SSD will always be an option and when selected, always boots.  So it seems to be some kind of initialization timing when the BIOS looks at the various hardware.

Hi Pedicone1211,

I would request you to run diagnostics just to make sure the hardware is fine. Please reply with your  findings

My new Dell 9020 also "occasionally" fails to reboot into Windows, fails during POST with screen saying "No Boot Device Found". I'm not using any SSD drives. My 9020 was purchased directly from Dell. My hard disk that came with the PC is a Seagate 1TB model ST1000DM003. My workaround is to keep trying to reboot, maybe unplug power completely, maybe visit F2 setup first. This issue, while infrequent, is annoying and gives one a sense of total loss & fear when it does occur.

I have 6 Dell 9020 computers with this problem.  I have updated the BIOS to A08 and it still hasn't resolved the issue.  I have about 70 of these installed with about 170 more to go.  I am hoping this issue will be resolved soon.  The users have to keep rebooting and powering down the computer until they get "lucky' enough for the 9020 to recognize that there really is an SSDH drive in it.  It does not show up in the BIOS until the computer successfully boots up.  I have both Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 runnjing on these computers, but it really doesn't matter because the computer does not find the drive to load the operating system.  It is intermittent, and frustrating when it does happen.  Let's hope there is a solution other than replacing the MB, as I would hate to do that to 240 computers.  I could use Dell on-site repair to do this, I guess if it starts to spread.

I have a brand new Optiplex 9020 SFF with the same issue.  The first time the PC is booted the Dell splash screen displays briefly but then there is just a blinking cursor in the top left corner of the screen.  I have left the PC in this state for ~10mins but it doesn't change.  You have to power it off and then power it on again and usually the second or third time the PC boots into Windows normally :S

I have run the Dell hardware diagnostics and no problems were found.  I have all the latest software and drivers and the BIOS version is the latest available from your website which is A07.  This really seems to be a BIOS or motherboard issue.  It seems that the SSHD is not being detected by the BIOS on the first boot for some reason.  I have also received the "No Boot Device Found" error message once which confirms this theory.  BTW the SATA Operation is set to "Raid" in the BIOS however this is how it came from the Dell factory.

Since there appears to be several other ppl experiencing the same issue perhaps this was a bad batch?  Surely this is a known issue that someone is working on or there is already a resolution for??

I contacted Dell Support by phone and they wanted me to run msconfig (which is ridiculous because the issue is happening during boot, probably even before the bootstrap stage which means that the OS has not even been loaded yet!)  However I decided to humour them and as requested selected to change to a selective startup and turn everything off except for my Anti-Virus software.  This of course did nothing.  They also wanted me to try a system restore which I declined because that has nothing to do with the price of eggs!

It is really disappointing to purchase a relatively expensive new PC and experience problems with it right from the outset...  I am hoping that the service from Dell Support will be able to alleviate this disappointment with a swift resolution of this issue.  Here's hoping!

* Load the latest A07 Bios
* If you have already verified A07 is loaded, restart the computer, enter the Bios, choose Load Defaults
* Retest

If after doing the above you still have the issue, the motherboard will need to be replaced. If you have single 9020, you need to go through the normal technical support process. If you have multiple systems (170), you should contact your Dell TAM (Technical Account Manager). Either way, we need to exchange some motherboards to see if the issue abates.

This is because, Your C: drive  lost the active stage.

Download Partition Wizard 7 from Mini Tool and boot on partition wizard and make your primary partition C: active and save.

Restart the computer and You will get the windows log in screen.

cheers.

Did this issue ever get resolved? Having same issue on 3 new PC's

Thanks for the tip on F12. :emotion-15:

We have two of these computers and one of them had the boot issue, until thanks to you I started looking for an answer in the boot sequence.

We have been able to reproduce this: leaving a USB MP3 player plugged in after shut down and then the boot issue appears on next boot. I think the computer is trying to boot from what it sees as a flash drive?

In any case, the issue seems solved for us: unplug the mp3 player.

If Dell can reproduce this, they can patch the BIOS I hope. Would be nice to be able to leave the player plugged in. I'm hesitant to hack the BIOS settings myself and hope Dell comes through.

For security and basic functionality, boot order is important. If the presence of a usb device is causing boot issues, you should probably change your boot order to exclude USB boot devices, or at least place the hard drive before them. in any case bios settings should not be viewed as "hacks". If you are concerned about making changes, just take note of what you changed in case you change something in error. Even a novice can do this.
