Optiplex 960 DisplayPort Use
I just got an Optiplex 960 SFF. It has an E8400 3.0Ghz CPU, 8GB of ram, 1TB Seagate Pipeline drive, Onboard Q45 Graphics and a Displayport Video connector. I read on Dells website that DisplayPort is the "New" video standard and better than HDMI and that it was designed to carry Video plus HD Audio. I have hooked this up using the DisplayPort with an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter to a Vizeo 32" TV as a monitor & Speakers. I cannot get any audio from this or from the rear green jack to the "PC" audio in on the TV. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Hi leonpress,
kindly update the audio and video drivers from the support website.
Below is the link to install the drivers:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/Product/optiplex-960
From the list of drivers click on ‘Audio (1)’ and click on ‘Get Driver’ and follow the onscreen instruction to download the ‘Audio’ driver. After Audio driver installation, install the Video driver. To install the ‘Video driver’ click on ‘Video (6)’. Please select the first driver that is ‘Intel-Driver’. Restart the system. Kindly check if there is audio on the system.
This should fix the audio issue on the system. However you might not get audio on the TV as the HDMI to Display port adapter might not be capable of converting Display port audio to HDMI port audio.
Please reply with the results.
Thanks and Regards,
Sujatha K

I encounter that issue when there is more than one sound device available and one other than that of the DisplayPort is selected.
You can determine this via the Sound applet: run mmsys.cpl from the Run box or a command prompt.
If, as was suggested earlier, your adapter is not converting the audio signals, you can add a discrete video card like a Sapphire 6450, which has native HDMI. I am using a Sapphire with an HTPC connected to a TV, with excellent results.

Well, I have a discrete video card (HD3450 DELL/ATI OEM with dual DisplayPort) but there is only one device appearing in the Sound Applet.
I don't know if it is the graphic card that doesn't acquire the audio signal by PCI-E or if it is the MotherBoard that doesn't give SDPIF alike signal or if there is a driver needed and not provided by DELL. (I've installed all software of the Optiplex 960 Dell Support page)
If only I knew where the problem come from... I could change or add something hardware or software.
some ideas about who is responsible for no audio output on displayport of optiplex 960 with native harware (HD3450 DELL/ATI OEM with dual DisplayPort) ?
thanks for all advices of people who have been successful (or not) on getting audio over displayport on this machines ;)

I used a 960 for a few months as a development box, and the first thing I did to prep it was replace the 3450 card with a Sapphire 6570 with DVI and HDMI outputs.

Thanks for the advice, I know this graphic card is really slow regarding the CPU but it is used only for browsing and video playing by my eighty years old granpa.
I considered changing the graphic card, really. I tried with a double height GF 560 but there is only place for a single height GF card (have to buy one).
BUT the problem is where the hell is supposed to pass the audio data ? by the PCI-E? or by a dedicated cable like older GFcards? (my GF8800 works with an external or internal cable, no driver, no software, so, it always works)

Do yourself a huge favor and install one of these. It has an onboard HDMI eight-channel sound device that will transmit audio via the HDMI port. Only one cable is needed for both video and audio.
I am using one of these cards with a 60-inch videophile-quality plasma and the results are amazing.

Thanks very much!
After searching a lot, effectively sound is the problem only of graphic card on last models.
On earlier models like my GF 8800 the sound passes through a SPDIF link (in or outside the PC) so the motherboard or audio card has to have SPDIF output...

With an external sound card providing SDPIF I suppose :)
The 960 have no sdpif output AFAIK.
I've already ordered my Sapphire HD6450, I'll confirm here if it works in a few days.
Thanks for giving a hand!

It was Realtek onboard SPDIF; I connected the cable to the pins on the motherboard, and got 5.1 bitstreaming over HDMI.
You're welcome on the card, and let us know how it works out.
