Optiplex 960 slow boot

Hi Dell,

I have an Optiplex 960 which intermittently shows a very long boot time.  If the system boots and the hard disk light is constatntly lit, the boot time can take more than 10 minutes and the PC is very slow to respond.  If during this slow boot, I press and hold the power button to turn off the PC and then turn it back on again, it will boot normally.  Is this known behavior?

I believe I have all the latest BIOS patches and updates installed.

Thanks and kind regards

Hi Chris the issue could be related to the HDD, try a defragmentation or a Full Windows Reinstallation, also some process depends of the RAM, if is less that 1GB and you have high performance softwares installed will delay the boot. Regards. Vic.

Hi Vic, No disk space is definitely not an issue - hundreds of gigabytes free...  Thanks for the idea though!

I have the same issue with a client with an Optiplex 960 Desktop form factor.  They have Windows XP Pro sp3, with a Quad Core.  The customer also has an Optiplex 755 with a Quad Core which runs circles around this pc.  It was originally purchased from Dell Outlet so we're thinking it was returned from some buyer who experienced the same problem, we replaced the hard drive and it didn't help.  We converted it from IRRT to AHCI SATA mode, that didn't help.  We reinstalled Windows, without all the Dell management tools, that didn't help.  We're just assuming a bad motherboard with an intermittent problem got out to  manufacturing.
