Optiplex GX260 Memory Upgrade Problems

Our church has a Dell Optiplex GX260 with 256 MB RAM. I purchased and installed one stick of 1 GB DDR 2100. When I install the stick and boot the computer, I get a series of beeps: 1 - 3 - 2 indicating a memory issue. In addition, the D and B lights are yellow/amber and the C and A lights are green - a further indication of memory configuration issues.

I believe the RAM is correct and have:
1. Reseated the new stick.
2. Removed the original 256 MB stick and installed just the 1 GB stick.
3. Replaced the original 256 MB stick - which is the only configuration that works.

Any suggestions on what to try next? Is there a jumper issue? Should I upgrade BIOS? I need to check the current BIOS version.

Thanks for any help!

Lane

Since removing the new stick works, there clearly is a compatibility problem.  Many hundreds of reports on the forums of value ram and other ram not guaranteed compatible by the manufacturer not working. Kingston KVR "value ram" is one such product, while the Kingston KTD line of modules IS guaranteed compatible.  Many forum regulars recommend www.crucial.com for great info and guaranteed compatible memory.  You could indeed first try updating the bios to be sure however that that isn't the problem.  There are no jumpers.

Thanks for the response.

The memory is from N-Synch and I've had good luck purchasing from them in the past. I'll try updating the BIOS and then contact N-Synch to see what they say.

Thanks again! Lane
