Thanks mombodog! That does help quite a bit! I am just finding all these Intel Pentium processor numbering system a bit overwhelming...
Just to clarify.. I am trying to buy either of the following processors (not from Dell but off a general computer store):
Processor 560
" " 560J
" " 561
" " 570J
" " 571
I am more interesting in the 561 and above processors as the 57x series have a 3.8Ghz speed (a 1Ghz increase to what I currently have)...
So do the 5x1 series work with the GX280? I ask this because they use Intel® EM64T technology and in the fine print: Intel® EM64T requires a computer system with a processor, chipset, BIOS, operating system, device drivers and applications enabled for Intel EM64T. Processor will not operate (including 32-bit operation) without an Intel EM64T-enabled BIOS.
So does the GX280 rev. A08 have this EM64T capability?
"My hopes are that by the end of this discussion other people who read this thread have a clear knowledge of exactly which processors are supported."
Since this specific info is never released by Dell, we have to rely on others experimentation most of the time, unless a Dell insider makes a post. I do hope you find the answer without experimenting yourself.
Well I am no expert, but it looks like as long as it is a prescott series cpu.
Dell is so tight lipped about bios upgrades and what they support, you should wait for others to post about this.
I have also seen where others have installed an unsupported processor, and get the bios post "Unsupported Processor" message, but it boots into Windows anyway, and is seen correctly by Windows. Go figure.
Right ok.. I'll hold off buying it for a couple of days then... I just want to make sure cause it seems that the GX280 could handle it fine as long as the BIOS has this EM64T technology... If it does then I can't imagine why the 5x1 processors would not work!
Sorry I can't give you the exact Intel CPU number, nor can I give you any information about your specific question, but it's a data point, none the less.
FYI, I installed 2x 1GB RAM modules and it now says it's doing Dual Interleaved Memory Channel Mode too! Whoo Hoo! Windows Vista64 "Experience" up from 1.1 to 4.2!!! (With a ATi 1650 Graphics card.)
Now if I could just get my Pioneer SATA DVDRW drive working!!
You can find out the Processor model by getting a small free program from www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php called CPU-Z ... it should give you all the info you need!
I would still like confirmation from someone who has a 660J, 661, 670J or 671 Intel P4 Processor installed...
as far as the memory goes the GX280 can handle up to 4gb.. right now I have 4x 512mb Kingston ValueRam DDRII 533mhz and am loving the speed of it! :) My Vista Experience Index is at 4.1 only cause of the processor other wise it would be a 5.5 average...
Not sure about your DVDRW drive there... in fact I didn't know optical drives came with SATA connection.. I use an LG DVDRW (one of those super-multi drives that handle read/write of CDs and DVDs) but is on an IDE connection...
