Optiplex GX620 Pentium D 960 and Heatsink issues

I recently upgraded my Optiplex GX620 to pretty much the maximum hardware I could find as of late due to just wanting to have a decent med-core gaming rig.

I replaced my P4 HT 521J processor and stuck in a Pentium D 960. The only concern I have now is if the stock Dell heatsink and fan that the computer came with will be sufficient enough to keep the cpu and motherboard relatively cool. I even replaced the stock power supply that the computer came with. Am I able to change the heatsink and fan for an after market one or is the Dell stock heatsink/fan combo what I am stuck with?

This is currently the computer hardware/specs I have on it. Oh, it's the Mini-Tower form of the gx620 too.

Intel Pentium D 960 3.6Ghz CPU

XFX Radeon HD6670 1GB DDR5 GPU

4GB DDR2 PC-5300 Ram

480w Logisys Power Supply model PS480D

1T Western Digital 7200 RPM HDD

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Series sound card

The default heatsink and fan will work fine.

Plus, the heatsink and fan are Dell proprietary units.

Re: Optiplex GX620 Pentium D 960 and Heatsink issues

I almost figured that they'd be proprietary units, the reason as to why I was asking though was because I have already seen a few temperature warnings for the CPU in my Bios log.

Another concern was not being able to buy a complimentary fan for the case itself to remove some of the hot air inside 😞

The default Aluminum heatsink and fan are not Sufficient.  Thats why there is a Copper Heatpipe

High performance version.  The Power Supply will need to be updated also.

From the 620 FAQ

Both versions of Pentium D 960 (SL9K7 - D0 - 95W) or (SL9AP - C1 - 130W) will need DELL Performance Heatsink J9761. I also recommend Arctic Silver 5 (Thermal Paste).

Re: Optiplex GX620 Pentium D 960 and Heatsink issues

I had actually already read that thread but I was unsure only due to some people stating that the original heatsink would be enough.

Now you also mentioned that the fan as well wouldn't work? Meaning I'd have to replace that too?

The 130W version is the problem.

You have a 945 not a 960 and its likely the 95W part not a 130W part.

The 960 130W CPU is what we are talking about.

RE: Optiplex GX620 Pentium D 960 and Heatsink issues

Hello!

Last Saturday I've upgraded my GX620 with Pentium D945 (rev D0 -95Watt).  I run stress test from MyDell software for CPU, it load CPU to 99% and passed after ~15min. Cooler run at 1500-1900rpm. No issues already for 3 days. What was your problem?

RE: Optiplex GX620 Pentium D 960 and Heatsink issues

Must be the copper version for 130W Cpu

Not the default Aluminum heatsink.

Thats why there is a Copper Heatpipe High performance version. The fan is the same only the heatsink needs replacement.

DELL OptiPlex GX620 - FAQ - Frequently Asked (and answered ...

HEATSINK D9729     SHROUD J9761  for the tower.

There is also a copper Heatpipe version for the Desktop and SFF models.
