Optiplex XL 590 boot up process and system setup

Optiplex XL 590 was booting up o.k. Did not use the computer for 4 months. On return, booted up to WIN95, O.K.

Then stopping booting up to WIN95 unless the battery is removed and reinserted. Can either try to set time and date and boot into WIN95 or not set time and date and still boot into WIN95.

New battery installed.

WIN95 is not grabbing the time from setup. WIN95 is grabbing the date.

What am I doing wrong?

Note: when using system setup, to save configuration press which keys.....ESC for exit or ALT + B to reboot ???

Can not get into system setup with CTRL + ALT + Enter.

WIN95 runs perfectly. Floppy disk drive works o.k. CD-rom works o.k. Modem connection works o.k.

Please give me your take on the above problem.

You can always set the date and time in WIN95 and it should adjust the cmos clock.

You could also try the NIST internet time service if you have access to the internet on that machine.

Thanks for the answer back.

I don't have a problem changing the time and date when I do get into system setup or WIN95.

My problem is getting the Optiplex XL 590 to start up.

XL is off.
Turn on.
Monitor shows initial verbage and starts memory count down.
Stalls.

Turn off.
Remove cover.
Remove battery.
With cover on or off, turn XL back on.

Monitor shows inital verbage and starts memory count down.
Says time/date not set, F1 to continue or F2 to system setup.

F1 starts WIN95. Time and date incorrect. Correct both on WIN95 screen.

Turn off.

Turn on.

Monitor shows initial verbage and starts memory count down.
Stalls.

Turn off.
Remove battery.
Turn on.
Monitor shows initial verbage and starts memory count down.
Says time/date not set. F1 to continue or F2 to system setup.

F2
Change time and date.
Esc to exit Tried ALt + B to reboot.
Neither seems to save the system startup with the time/date changes. WHY NOT?????

WIN95 starts.

I am trying to find out why the setup is not holding the time/date and what to do to fix this problem, so that the XL does not Stall after the memory count down.

Help.....

Most obvious cause is that the battery is bad.

I have replaced the battery. Have two brand new batteries and used both to no avail.

I noticed that once in the system setup, making the necessary changes in time and date and then pressing the ALT + B to 'reboot' will reboot the computer but she hangs up at the memory count down.

If I press the ESC to 'exit', the computer will continue to start WIN95.

I can not press F1 or F2 at the start up of the computer. Keystrokes do not work unless I remove the battery and reinsert and continue from that point.

Any more suggestions.

thanks

Make a CLEAN boot floppy with no config.sys and autoexec.bat

Remove the hard drive in cmos and see how the rest of the system works without the hard drive.

Viruses and Dying hard drives can also exibit this behavior.
