actually Iḿ running an P4 550 on my gx280.... wich works fine but sometimes the heatsinkfan is getting load.... so I would like to change to an P4 661 which will have much less TDP....

Will this cpu work on the gx280? or any of the 6x1 series cpuś? the chipset says yes... but....whats about bios?

It might work and the CPU is likely cheap. If it doesn't work, you can always reinstall the original CPU.

I have 1st hand tried the 550's(ALL OF THEM at least 26 CPU's) to only get the "Incompatible CPU" remark!  The Bios is updated to latest a08 and everything is set where it should be BUT NO 550/550J - 560 - or 570 will boot!

The Faster cpu's require copper heatsink AND Bigger power supply that the SFF versions do not have.

What 550 CPU are you able to run? Out of 26 CPU's ALL 550/550J NONE will boot even with everything flashed and tweaked as needed... NONE!

I am running 700 Watt Certified PSU & Corsair A50 w/Twin 120mm Fans as the heatsink Bios flashed to latest.... That has nothing to do with WHY wont ANY 550/550J OR HIGHER BOOT IN MY GX280? THE MOBO IS REV.2... and EVERYTHING dell says about cpu support  over 2.8GHz will not boot!

We are mixing and Matching here.  There are 2 Kinds of GX280 Tower.   There is no SFF version of GX280 that can physically fit a 700W power supply.

Bios must be updated to handle newer processors and the Performance Copper Heatpipe Heatsink is Required.  Thermal shutdown/lockup will occur almost immediately (within seconds) for a system without the proper heatsink.  What bios version?  What S spec for the cpu?

You didn't say what power supply but if its a PFC power supply this Will not work with a GX280.

This is why an Antec Earth Watts does not work and an Antec True Power II does.

I never stated SFF. It is a full desktop... Hence a full sized PSU and Corsair A50 heatsink.

the last 2 CPU's I tried are Pentium® 4 3.40GHz/1M/800 SL7J8 (5423B208)

Pentium® 4 3.60GHz/1M/800 SL7J9 (3422A7791)

I have about 200 775 p4's no joke! and nothing faster than the SL7PU 3.00GHz boots!

C7195 is the Old style Skydive Tower Motherboard.

I think you need Rev A03 or A04 before it supports faster processors.
